Bobby Gordon and Dave McKenna "Clarinet Blue" Arbors cd

It makes sense that I would like Bobby Gordon so much because like I do he's very fond of the music and style of Pee Wee Russell. This is a nice one! McKenna gives just the right support and delivers some nice solos.

Funny item to relate about that SFJazz Album, Lon.
I posted that album on the Hoffmann site four or five years back and got the most negative feedback from about twelve or so members, really almost all at once.
"If you like that c*ap, then you don't know what jazz is."
"I don't like my jazz done that way! No Soul!"
"Nothing there! I hate that kind of junk. I prefer the improvisation available with actual jazz."
... etc, etc, etc.
Now, I'm paraphrasing some, but that is what I got from the forum exchanges that followed.

I only responded with smileys. I wrote out a few comments (in the vein of Rodney King's most famous quote), but I did not post them.

BUT, I do like that album!

Great choice. It is so exceedingly rare that I actually own one of which you post.

Although, I do admit to finding and purchasing many that I had not known about from selections you have posted over the years.
Thank you for your commitment.

I'm still discovering some treasures in my Deutsche Grammophon collection for now.
I have over a hundred waiting that I have not prepared for play, yet.

Yes, I encountered similar sort of crud on that forum until I started my own jazz thread there which has turned out to be a blessing, my musical discussion home:

I like all the SFJazz Collective releases, especially when they do their "Original Compositions." Those commenting were just plain wrong. Every edition of the Collective are experienced improvisors and familiar with the jazz tradition. Sorry you two have had that kind of flack. Glad you have this one as well.

Powerful ear piercing trumpet. My rig passed The previous owner did not set the antiskate or did not play on a table that had one. Still enjoyable though. John

Currently listening to the album Poetry…by Stan Getz and Albert Daily. Picked this up used in a thrift store yesterday on vinyl. It was in perfect condition both inside and out. I grabbed 3 albums for 25 bucks. It’s a simple and relaxing album…great dinner music. I would say Daily gets almost as much, if not more, play time than Getz.

This was my 2nd find on vinyl in the thrift store….Tony Mottola and the Brass Managerie. Having played guitar growing up, Tony is definitely one of my favorites.

While I like this album… It wouldn’t be my first choice since it’s not really my style of music… But the big Let down was The song Malagueña. With Roy Clark’s live rendition being the best…I would have thought Tony Mottola’s version would have been a contender but unfortunately it was not even close.

Classic McCartney sound. The ZROCK2 worked great on this album…a small tweak from when its compared to being bypassed was just enough to round out the midrange.

I got this one about the same time as Spirit's 12 Dreams. I would have to include it in the desert island package Geno! It is so corny and off the wall. Despite all of the antics it does have a flow that draws my attention. I loved the reactions that folks displayed when bits and pieces was played at parties!

Reply #22883 - 02/22/23 at 03:04:06 A previous post reminded me that I've been listening to the same beat up LP of Rhapsody & Blues since I was in college. So I treated myself to the SHM-CD and it is amazing. The sound is big and dynamic and detailed, and the music is self-recommending (if you're into that kind of thing).

Arrived from cdjapan.co.jp last night, a Helen Merrill recording that has eluded me until now. So glad this one was reissued!

Got this one today and just finished up a fun late night session. A very spacious and dynamic recording with incredible soundstage/imaging. The record itself is very quiet and a really good quality pressing. Well worth having on vinyl, especially with the bonus material on the current release. I had low expectations as my luck with clear vinyl has not been great, but this one restored my faith. Terry Bozzio, Tony Levin and Steve Stevens… Good stuff!

I was listening to a folk based university sponsored radio show in the car a few nights ago and the featured artists were old blues singers from the '30s and '40s.

The commercial laden radio show kind of inspired me to dig out some of my meeger collection of that old music.
I have a half way collection of digital files, but only a few LPs and CDs from this genre.

I have this LP from the record store closing I visited recently.
A few others as well.

... but it's old blues for me for a while.

Dearie inhabits the characters singing the songs convincingly, even when singing about murdering husbands "to keep her love alive."
