Some good music to listen to while working on the house, though it is "spinning" off my hard drive, little easier that way.

lot of oldies but goodies here.  i'm listening to a relatively new artist in Priscilla Ahn's "A Good Day".  nice inoffensive sound, in the veins of sarah mclachlin/norah jones.

Lon,

Just listened to the Miles Davis album myself the other evening.  A great piece!

Last night was Santana's "Shaman", ELO's "Time", Dave Grusin's "Night-Lines", and Chic's "Risque".  Was a long session, but very good.

I usually don't post on this forum because when I am listening to my system, I am doing it actively from my listening position and am away from the computer.  I posted a few days back because a member had was listening to the same album I had just listened to a few evenings before.  Last nights listening session caused me to make this post.  Last night I listened to Steely Dan's "Aja",  Al Hirt's "Horn A-Plenty" (both vinyl), Susan Tedeschi's "Back To The River", and Black Crowes's "The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion" (both on CD).  It was because of Black Crowse that I am writing this.

I bought this CD in the late nineties.  At the time I was stationed aboard ship (retired Coast Guard), so I only had a small CD player and headphones.  I didn't like the CD that much.  I listened again a few years ago through my surround sound system, and again I didn't like the album that much.  In the years that I have had the CD, I probably only listened to it no more than a half dozen times.  I decided to dust it off last night and listen to it through the Torrii MKII and the HDTs.  WOW, what a difference a system can make.  I actually liked the album for the first time.  Sonically, it is a much better recording than I had remembered it.  It still isn't on top of my favorites list, but I won't be keeping it in the rack between listening sessions as long now.

On a side note, I just got the Susan Tedeschi CD the other day, and it is absolutely fantastic (if you like hard rockin blues).  First of her work that I have ever listened to.

I really need to learn to preview my posts before submitting (LOL).  I bought the Black Crowes CD in the late eighties, not the nineties.

Laughing at you, Lon (not in a bad way and yes, I see the post is a couple of weeks old). You once made mention of how you did not care for my selection of Hampton Hawes' work.

I've been on a Hampton Hawes kick for about a week, now, as has my ten year old son ...

I don't remember that DD. I don't always like Hawes and I don't like him in large doses, but ther's some good HAwes.  I picked that one up cheap in the Fantasy Records sale at www.oldies.com  Some real deals indeed!

Right now, listening to Sgt. Pepper's, the new stereo remaster.  I've had a mono lp (and transferred to cdr) for forty years.  The stereo is freaking me out a little!

Hey, thanks for the heads-up on that sale! Lots of great stuff available there.

With all the "hoopla"  surrounding the Beatles' Remasters, the BB store where I work has opened their merchandising suggestion box to all interested staff. For a while they have had some Martin Logan Electrostatic hybrid (they use woofers) speakers set up in the "high dollar area."  Not long ago I set up a turntable and Denon receiver - not too bad, really. (Basically, it is some of the "best" stuff you can buy at any BB store) It does a half decent job of showing off vinyl with some recordings and it is our way of capitalizing upon the recent resurgence of interest in vinyl.

Sunday, one of the youngsters brought in a "Sgt. Peppers"  album that he found in his dad's closet.

I immediately had a good look at it. I am not that much of an LP collector or anything, but I was around and sort of aware while these albums were being produced. I immediately recognized an early release! I also saw these albums re-released, re-pressed -  ad nauseum -  to keep up with the demand.
His dad's album, which this kid brought in and just left lying around, was a Black Rainbow Capitol, in excellent condition, from the third run, off the second master, as far as I can remember from my own research over at Hoffmann's site, trying to identify my own couple-of-dozen early "Pepper's"  treasures.

I told him not to leave it here at the store, unprotected. It was probably too valuable to play in this environment, anyway, I tried to warn him. Sure enough, today (the FOLLOWING DAY, FFS!!), someone stole it!
Some days, it is very difficult to not hate people!

Enough with the depressing asides, for now!  Back to "What's Spinning."

I have been enjoying a few vocal things, lately, as well. Not normally what I reach for, but with some influence from my wife and her taste (we're able to spend more time together, lately - this is good!), I have recently spun up some Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, Eddie Arnold, C,S,N&Y, Mandisa, etc - that is to say, a widely mixed bag of vocal artists, well outside my normal range.

She does not get jazz and becomes quite stressed if I (or my son, for that matter) push too much on her, but I have managed to give her quite a bit of enjoyment from my simple system, by allowing her taste in music to prevail a bit. I have also developed a great deal more appreciation for the recordings that made these vocalists so popular.

I feel like that I should hide for going so long and just NOW discovering the value this type of expression for myself.

My Pepper's, though not one of my very first lps, was one of the two lps I first bought with my own money.  We were in Swaziland and my dad had to go back to D.C. for an important meeting.  I gave him all my allowance money saved and asked him to buy me some albums to bring back.  This was one, and Parsley Sage Rosemary and Thyme was another.  It was very early after the release of Pepper's.  It's a black rainbow label.  I don't go to Hoffman's forum etc. and I really don't "collect" vinyl any longer or play vinyl now, but that mono version is how I know Pepper's, and there are significant differences in the actual mix let alone the stereo thing.

I've gotten six of the stereo digipaks, and  have ordered the mono box.

Some nice strings, and some snarling guitars sounding really good on this one

Plus, the Fender Jazz Bass really sounds like a Fender Jazz Bass.

Is it REALLY you, Rap?  I have missed you, my friend!  How are "things?"

I have been ripping some of my massive stack of "straight off the board"  concert tapes (from the old days) to my hard drives, lately.

Most recently, Sade, along with her awesome, funk/jazz/heavy, backing band, is working through the assortment of machines it takes to get this ripping done. I have nineteen shows to sift through.

Excellent, Lon.

I would never have known about him, except for a single reference I found on AAJ, one day.

Sad.

I'm on electric guitar, mostly, today.  Some Buddy Guy, Kenny Burrell, Steve Vai, Yngwei, Buckethead ...

... BTW, Lon, those nineteen shows only represent the ones I was able to record on four track.  My memory must serve for the several other, one time events, were time constraints became a hindrance. Recording was mostly a tertiary or quaternary luxury, only available to me due to the best of "lucky" scheduling circumstances.

Did you record all those shows. . .were they all Sade shows, those 19?  If so, I repeat "Wow." Smiley

I've been listening to piano giants. . . Duke, Monk, Bill Evans, and some interpretations of Ravel solo piano pieces today.

Dawg, was it Hampton Hawes or Oscar Peterson we were talking about in the past?  I remember waxing on about Oscar, that I wasn't that in to him.  Ironically, one day a few years ago he just clicked with me and I started collecting some of his trio and solo works of the fifties and sixties and seventies.  I still don't really get his stuff from the eighties and on up, but I may one of these days.

Ease up on me there a bit, Lon. WOW, indeed, though.
I try not to sound like I am bragging, but the simple reality of that time in my life was that I was a working professional in the live music performance industry, just like thousands of others who competed for my jobs.  Yet, I managed to stick it out for over eighteen years before I completely burned out and turned my back on that life. I made a few promotional contacts along the way that kept me afloat, happy, working and, occasionally, one or two that filled and fulfilled my imagination.

I was not that  "into"  TEH R&B  vocal sounds, around that time (I look back and, at first,  "She"  was just another job, in my mind, and I was hardly able to conceive of what an impact her "collective" body of work would have over the years, even though I was instantly intrigued, wide-eyed/neck-jerked by her band), but I have always loved funk and jazz.  Her back-up band was one of the best funk/jazz bands I ever heard.

To give you some perspective, though, I always "tried"  to record, but was often restricted by contract (due to the artists wanting to record with their own remote equipment or simply denying access, legally) or not able to get things ready in time for the live performances which actually made my living. I have over a thousand, seven or fifteen inch reels, representing nearly five hundred shows from many artists that I kept from those times.

Many of those tapes are absolutely amazing and represent a point of great pride for me to own. Nevertheless, I am generally filled with such humility at any thought of where I've been, that a balance is difficult to achieve at times.
So, please, forgive me for mentioning my past.

Dawg,

No, I'm so glad you mentioned it.  Makes me smile to think of seeing her so many times, and being able to record and have a record of it.

I think she's amazing, and my girlfriend and I really love Sade's music. She's releasing a new cd this year and I can't wait.  I only have all the official recordings, and can't wait for the next one.
