I've known all those Miles Davis LPs since the end of the 'seventies. . . interesting to imagine encountering them now for the first time!

Right now

John Beasley "Cauldron" . . . a cd that reminds me a bit of some of Monty Alexander's work, and some later fusion.

One blog calls it smooth jazz. Perhaps, but it's a bit rougher in important ways.

I have three cds by this lovely lady with a lovely voice (who sounds a lot like a friend I love). This one is perhaps here "poppiest" but any "pop" record that can feature cuica is fine by me.

Followed by

Kenny Burrell "The Road to Love" High Note cd

Inspired by JBZen’s post of a video clip of his victrola, I decided to search up and listen to Tex Beneke.  Brings me back to when I was a kid in my grandparents basement and when I was working at my uncle’s tailor shop.

Quick listening session before Palm Sunday dinner….Fleetwood Mac Rumours streaming in Roon and playing through my Grado’s.  It’s amazing how much detail this album actually has.  My first pressing Japan import on Vinyl is on another level, but this is damn good.

The  Art Blakey album got me thinking about the 2 CD Grant Green compilation "The Complete Quartets with Sonny Clark."

It includes performances from several recordings from 1961 and 1962 including "Nigeria," "Gooden's Corner," "Oleo," and some other songs that were recorded at those same sessions and later issued by Mosaic Records.

Art Blakey plays on the first seven songs, and I really like his energy.  I also like it when the liner notes confirm my thoughts - the author of liner notes for the 1980 release (Ben Sidran) says "for my money, the highlight of the album is the stylized arrangement of 'It Ain't Necessarily So.'"

This was also my first exposure to Sonny Clark.  It prompted me to look at some of his other recordings, and getting a copy of "Cool Struttin'," Rudy Van Gelder edition:

I had three entries into jazz as a teenager: first Miles Davis, then Wynton Kelly and then Art Blakey. I've cooled towards Blakey as a drummer, but he was quite the bandleader.

Now

Yeah it was really enjoyable… I may try to acquire it on vinyl.

Switching gears…. I decided to play some guitar music. Currently streaming some Joe Pass in Roon.  For DJango is a classic and an old favorite.

Lon…the Count Basie Kansas City 3 is a great album.  I haven’t listened to that one in a long time.

Currently listening to an old favorite I listen to regularly… The Ray Brown Trio:  Bassics.  In this case..
Streaming is great because my vinyl album would have been worn out by now from being overplayed.

Yes, Basie as pianist fascinates me--I hear so much of Fats Waller (a big favorite of mine) in his playing which makes sense, and I love how Basie edits things down to essential melody and swing.

Haven't enjoyed this cd in a while. I was thinking of my late first wife Helen, and that led me to think of listening to Helen Merrill, and I saw this one, which was sitting neglected on a shelf a long time.

A couple of nice old albums from Herb Ellis arrived in the stack. I am down to twelve boxes of mystery left and the stack will be completely culled to my taste.

Lately, I have managed to move out and donate to "friends" about thirty boxes of mid-pop style LPs I no longer bear interest in hearing again.
I kept the Black Keys and a few others, but mostly other people will enjoy these far more than I ever will again.
Realize that those thirty something boxes I gave out represent a greater quantity of LPs than my original collection before this amazing gift, by a fair bit.
My keeper collection has more than quadrupled last year, due to this woman's grace. Still a lot more organizing to go.

I kept these two Herb Ellis for myself.
I got this one cleaned up and had spun it early this morning.
Playing it again, because I am sure I missed something. I had never heard this album before.

Late night is congruent to early morning?
Super quiet right now; I'm the only one up this early around here.

With my PS Audio regenerator the sound is consistent whether day or night. . . was freaky at first, but I'm more than a dozen years into using their regenerators newer regenerators and accustomed to it.

This is my main listening time while Lucinda usually sleeps another three hours or so. Just me and the dog.

Right now

Keith Jarrett "Still Live" disc 2 ECM 2 cd set. Precious music for me since this frist came out (I bought it then on cassette).

Stan Kenton "The Complete Capitol Studio Recordings Of Stan Kenton 1943-1947" Mosaic Records 7 cd box set, disc 2

There is some great music in this set, I pulled it out of the darkness of the back of a set of shelves and haven't listened to it for quite some time. Sound is fantastic for its time--Capitol can be relied on for that. As can Mosaic.

My Kleenline power is thirty years out of date. Industrial hospital and computer bank gear from the '80s. I should update this. It was the best I could get for my sound reinforcement systems at the time.

One of the PS Audio systems would be my current choice for a "bring it in the house" power unit. A buddy uses three for his various systems, in house. Swears by them! His are one tenth the size of my older power stations.
Hard to compare our systems; I've been an OB guy for over twenty years and he is a Klipsch guy. I never cared for Klipsch much. I find all of them (I've heard all of them!) quite fatiguing.

I have a few upgrades planned for my system this year.
I traded well for a Luxman pre, last year, but I am only just OK with the differences it makes compared to the old tube pre I have had for ages.
I made the choice. BUT, I have balanced ins and outs when I get the rest of the way there.

A seperate balanced out DAC component is a "next" item of interest for me, but I would grab fresh power if available at a bargain.
My audio budget requires this search and wait behavior.

For now, some Stan Getz and Oscar Peterson. Herb Ellis makes a showing as well on this one.

Yes, I went overboard when I had money in between wives and after and I don't regret it but it was a big expense. But I am mostly done (he says, as he waits for another component to arrive today!)

The good thing is you enjoy what you have, and it's about the music!

The music is all any of this is about.

I've begun to really enjoy more from the '50s jazz era I had either "missed" earlier or did not make the exploration effort.

I popped in a modern CD of cutesy mellow smooth jazz for a sit down dinner a few days ago and the compression on the recording was the main thing I felt, more so even than the music itself.

I know compression was typical from early on with recordings, but these older recordings just have so much LIFE preserved for us.
My ears are not great anymore, but they are still educated. I know what I am hearing.
Many dynamic peaks only barely fit into the media and often stun with clarity. Taken right up to the very edge of the tech during those days.

Going with another LP,  "Ben Webster Meets Oscar Peterson"
Pic borrowed from Discogs, again.

Same Old DD…..that Ben Webster album is really good.  I listened to it last week.  To stay on Ben Webster…Ballads is also good.  It’s more mellow and soft, but enjoyable as well.  Currently streaming through Roon…

Chick Corea "Return to Forever" ECM LP

One of my oldest LPs, still sounding great. I bought this shortly after being turned on to Miles Davis' electric catalog, back in '73, before going off to the University of Chicago.

Just a beautiful album.

Jack Teagarden "A Portrait of Mr. T" Roulette mono LP

One of these days I'll look for a stereo LP copy (I have it on cd in stereo). I love the sound of Roulette LPs. This is a neat session, Don Goldie does his very best imitation of Louis Armstrong on "Rorckin' Chair."

Cannonball Adderley "Spontaneous Combustion" Savoy 2 LP mono

There was a time twenty some years ago when I was obsessed with the Savoy catalog and Adderley in particular. I can hear why today. Wink

Currently spinning on vinyl Al Cohn “Standards of Excellence”.  This album has a nice groove with a clean  arrangement of instruments.

When I saw the album cover titled "Portrait of Mr. T," I was surprised because the portrait does not look like Mr. T at all - for example on Mr. T's 1984 album "Be Somebody (or Be Somebody's Fool):"

Perhaps I'm missing something?
