This is a deserted island pick for me. I have the original Atlantic 2 LP set, the American cd release and this 1991 Japanese release. I think I prefer the sound of the US cd release a bit more, but this Japanese includes all the on stage banter and announcements and those are as good as the song performances!

Jimmy "The Lizard/The Silver Gauntlet" Rowles is the musical director here and one reason these live recordings shine. Then there is Joe Pass. . . and Carmen is totally in charge and "on."

Billie Holiday "Lady in Satin"

I stay away from this album more often than I should. Over time I have learned to really like it. The respectful, sentimental hammock of the orchestral backing behind her frank, seemingly unfiltered delivery. . . a unique blend. A few of these songs evoke emotional memory in me.

I'm actually listening on this "Essential Masters" set which includes her MGM album and some great broadcast material; this first disc has Billie at Newport 1958 (in stereo with airplane fly-overs!).

Ah Monday morning and I get to be back in front of my main system.

All this talk of the high power of the Torris or the sound of the Zen amps. I know where I fall in that, I love my SE84UFO3 Monoblocks with the Anniversary Mods and the Taboo Mk IV with the Anniversary mods, after living with Torris for a decade these are "fire." I look at them like living beasts.

The Monoblocks right now are giving me a great listen to Billie Holiday in her final album release, on the MGM label, "Billie Holiday" aka "Last Recording." Like "Lady in Satin" this is arranged and conducted by Ray Ellis, but it has a jazzier backing and feel. And though much is made, perhaps rightly, about the damage to Billie's voice, she still inhabits these songs and lets us into her world of feeling and texture. What a master she was from her first recordings on.

Playing a Hermeto Pascoal album for the first time is a lot like Gump's box of chocolate. You really don't quite know specifically what to expect. From a February 1981 appearance by Pascoal with "O Grupo" . . . and an exciting listen.

There was a time last decade when I played this every Sunday. Sounds really really good on this SACD, even though I might prefer the alternate mix that was released on a deluxe 2 cd edition.

Went to see my Dad today. This month he's been in hospice a year, bed-ridden but alert and upbeat. And in just over a week or so he'll be 90. The whole family will be together again for the first time in six months or so.

On the way there I listened to:

Chet Baker "Indian Summer" Dutch Jazz Archives Series NJA 0701. Dick Twardzik. . .what a fascinating pianist, gone way too soon.

On the way back I listened to:

Sonny Rollins "What's New" RCA/Sony Japan cd

And listened to some sad news on the radio.

I didn't get David Bowie much when I was younger and I only have two old albums, barely played, but as I have matured, so have my interests. I've managed to gather eight CDs of his work in recent hunts.
I have enjoyed some of them quite a lot when the mood is right.

I'm exploring some classical music this week. Today it's a collection I picked up at a garage sale. Bought many classical albums that day and many were not even opened.
This one was opened, but absolutely pristine inside.
These are Philips pressings from '73.
