The stubborn mule genius of Charles Mingus on display on a Blue Note cd that really does improve and expand on the United Artist LP.

Flawed but powerful music. The emotion and drive is very apparent and one could only wish that more time to master the arrangements could have happened. Schuller's "Epitaph" revisits most of this . . .it's a fascinating set as well but it lacks Mingus.

Charles Mingus "Complete Town Hall Concert" Japan UHQCD -- uses '94 Malcolm Addey mastering as far as I can tell.

I lost him on Monday evening and wanted to hear this, which we listened to together many times. He gave this to me when he went all cd, and I have better sounding digital copies but this still sounds pretty darned good.

Hey, Lon, I noticed in another thread that your father had recently passed on.
I want to extend my heart felt condolences to you and to all your family.

I was lucky when my dad died. He had had a massive heart attack and survived with 6% heart muscle and a lot of drugs for over a year. I got to say the things that needed to be said and spend all the time with him I could. He was still all there, but just could not do much. That extra bit of time was truly a blessing and some of our best times. I am lucky.

I hope you had some pleasant moments toward the end with your father.

He was one of my closer old time music aquaintances. We worked the same old haunts for years before they got things going for themselves. I was a punk kid and they were always the winner of the Battle of the Bands events.

DD, I'm glad you had that time with your Dad. It's precious. I am so glad this last year I got to talk to him every day and visit him a couple times a week and cook for him and read the same books and talk about them. The last nine years living close to him again have been wonderful.

As for memories near the end, we had a great 90th birthday with him last month. All his kids and most grandkids were crowded into his room all day, we gave him a stovepipe hat and Lincoln beard as a gag as he's a huge Civil War nut and he immediately chuckled and launched into a full recitation of the Gettysburg Address. Was a lot of fun, he was so happy in his gentle and restrained way.

We're doing well, we can't help but smile talking about him--my wife and he were such goofs together, singing and joking and laughing together, and he was the best role model I could imagine and I value all that I gained from him.

100 percent agreement with that. I read my Dad's obituary and I KNOW it all but it hits me with a similar impact. Amazing accomplishments and I didn't feel capable of it. (He would say "the difference is you didn't FEEL capable of it and shouldn't have questioned it, I didn't.")

Let's celebrate our great fathers (and mothers--it's Mother's Day tomorrow!)

We had given up on having a family. I try to make it special for my wife, as best I can. Now we have more family than we know what to do with. My own mom is quite a show as well! She's getting old. I am going to try to take this wisdom to both my, grown up, drinking age kids, again, but now from another angle, most particularly for my son who often has trouble finding the confidence to take another step.

(He would say "the difference is you didn't FEEL capable of it and shouldn't have questioned it, I didn't.")

I do not know how far your father's wisdom can carry, but I thank you for sharing it. It amounts to what I would call true.

I'm glad I could and did share it.

My father had at least 8 years of higher eduction, half of it in the religious realm. He had a lot of wisdom. My biggest regret in my life is that I let his huge, impressive shadow intimidate and frustrate me, when he neither intended nor wanted it to and was hardly aware that it could. Circumstances made that happen. When you come of age in a small town where you are "Reverend Armstrong's son, COMMA, Lon" before you are Lon period. . . the expectations and insecurities of others can shape or squash your own. (I know Steve had some similar experiences as a PK in a small town, at the very same time as we are only a few months apart in age).

Through it all I had a father's love, even if I didn't reach out for it when I should have. Just be there for your children, open and welcoming. That's what the world needs.

This was the first Lateef album I got and it was by accident--I bought one of the Charlie Parker albums on the Charlie Parker label and this was inside. It had the labels for the Parker album but it was this Lateef album instead. It took me a long time to figure out who it was, but I knew it wasn't Bird. I liked it a lot then and now.
