I really like Sonny. Sonny played a lot of tenor, in the sixties especially, whenever he was in front of an organ trio (often) he usually had a tenor. Also, he got so much crap from critics and listeners that he sounded like Charlie Parker when he played alto. Well he did, but he was no Charlie Parker (Parker was one of the few genius musicians of the twentieth century in my opinion) and Stitt also had his own style which I think eluded these critics and listeners. He often played tenor just to avoid these opinions. In the fifties he was all over the alto. Sixties and seventies he may even have played tenor a bit more.
On some recordings he even used a varitone on the tenor, which is wild! He used it differently than others (for example Eddie Harris) and I think he enjoyed it!
Right now, some Pat Martino. I've been listening to a lot of cds I bought cheap from the Fantasy Warehouse sale at
www.oldies.com Quite a few Sonny Stitts!
