"Hello Steve.
I have been
putting my new MG944s through their paces for a couple months now and
just wanted to let you know how much I am enjoying listening to my CD
music collection through them (mostly classical music). I have
them hooked up to a Bryston B60 integrated amp and a Bryston CD player.
What I value
in audio equipment is accurate reproduction of the music, warts and
all, and can say that this is exactly what the MG944s deliver. If
a recording is bad, it sounds bad, not artificially embellished.
On the other
hand, if a recording is good, the music shines through beautifully, and
with the lights out in my den and my eyes closed, I can pick out the
individual instruments and voices as if sitting front row centre at my
own personal concert.
Wonderful
speakers that replaced my old B&W bookshelf units and that have me
kicking myself for not making this change a long time ago. Thanks
for the music.
Kind regards,
Rob
P.S.
They also look great in my den, so my wife thanks you as well."
OVERVIEW
The
Zen
Ziegler's,
as
we
like
to
call
them,
are
a classic pair of
audiophile tower speakers with a thin profile and stepped baffle and
slanted front for stellar imaging. The driver layout is an MTM
configuration using a matched pair of 6 inch poly woofers and our
favorite Isodynamic Planar Ribbon tweeters. No crossovers on
either woofer, a single cap on the tweeter and 94 dB efficient with
FLAT response down to 28Hz! You definitely won't need a
sub-woofer with these fine speakers. A great choice if the
audiophile wishes to combine his 2 channel rig with the home theater
because these transmission line speakers have the performance and bass
control to hang out with your favorite action films at higher playback
levels.
CABINET DETAILS
The cabinet is meaty. It features lots of internal bracing to
strategically break up the back wave and stiffen the cabinet sides and
back. The top and front are double thick (1.5 inches). All
the edges are angled for minimal diffraction.
The internal labyrinth creates a transmission line that drives a
passive radiator in the base of the cabinet. The passive radiator
is pre-loaded against a 2 inch solid wood plinth that makes up the
bottom of the cabinet. This gives solidity to the bass weather
you use spikes or not, and reduces energy that travels into the
floor. Apartment dwellers take note.
The result of this design is linear response from 28Hz to 22000Hz
without inductors or networks to dumb down dynamics.
POWER REQUIREMENTS
Tube amp friendly with reasonable to above average performance on our 2
watt SET amplifiers but electrifying on higher power.
ON THE SOUND
& PERFORMANCE
Besides
the
elevated
performance
of
these
speakers,
their
biggest
asset
is
the
smoothness and disappearing act. Smoothness that is often hard
to
find in most high efficiency speakers... They never sound thin,
never
sound bloated, and never sound harsh, yet have tremendous detail and
speed that extends to the lowest octave. This is a great all
around
speaker because it does everything well above the norm and way above
it's price point.
FINISHES
These speakers are black with a walnut front and top. Custom
finishes like Maple, Oak, Cherry, Mahogany and even exotics can be
ordered for an extra fee and make the speakers non-refundable.
VALUE
These are by far the biggest bang for the buck speaker in the Decware
line. They were intended to be. Created as a sales tool for
our amplifiers at little to no profit they have made it possible for
people who can't afford speakers in the $2500/$4500 range and up to
hear something that not only competes but usually dominates. They
have indeed sold a lot of Decware amplifiers.

REVISION HISTORY
|
Original
MG944
-
2003
to
2008
Designed to be a high value speaker that exploits our factory direct
business model to give customers a true hi-end speaker to go with our
amplifiers... after all audio is always limited by the weakest
link and these speakers make sure the weak link is elsewhere.
|
|
Current
MG944
-
2008
to
present
The Carlson slot on the original MG944's was replaced with the plinth
base to further improve bass performance and keep the floor from
becoming a variable in that performance. The tweeter also was
improved in this model.
