Listening to Nat Adderley, "Work Song" from 1960:

The recording includes Wes Montgomery, who (to me) shines both as a soloist, and in backing up others.  Definitely has tracks that are not blues, but still feel very "bluesy!"  I like the title track "Work Song" - while not blues, it has been covered by blues players, I think including Paul Butterfield band (1968), and by harmonical player William Clarke on his 1992 album "Serious Intentions:"

I like his version, where the band sounds very comfortable playing this song, which is outside of the traditional Chicago blues style that William Clarke was best known for.  I lived in Los Angeles in the late 1980s, and saw him perform this song live a number of times.  He also stretched out to record some other jazz tunes, including "Walkin'" as performed by Miles Davis, and "Moten Swing" performed by a number of jazz players (including Count Basie and Oscar Peterson).

Hello, Dana.  I just got some CDs in the mail, including Josefine Cronholm, "Wild Garden" which you posted recently:

I like it!  Mellower than what I usually listen to, but very nice.  Just wanted to prove that I do (occasionally) listen to music from the present century!

I did particularly like the song "Don't Weep."  I had noted before that it reminded me of Japanese Koto music, so it was interesting to see that the lyrics were written by Japanese poet Chinkichi Takahashi.  So I think the music was intentionally related to traditional Japanese music.

Hotel Paradise
Josefine Cronholm / Ibis
Released: 2003

Hey Tone,  I also enjoy Hotel Paradise.  Same kind of ethereal kind of music but it makes my stereo sound so good.

My Dearest Darkest Neighbor
Hurray for the Riff Raff
Released: 2013

This is one of my favorite albums.  This was recorded as a bonus for supporting the band through a kickstarter campaign It was later released. In my opinion it''s much better than the album the campaign funded.  I love the stripped down recording.  They even left in the amplifier hum to give it that live feel.  If my garage was cleaned out and the band came over to give a concert this is how I imagine it would have sounded like.

Yotam "Brasil" JPP cd

My first with Yotam (Silbertstein) as a leader. Probably won't be my last. Beautiful jazz guitar sound and nice playing.

Stevie Wonder Innervisions was hiding in the back corner of my CD shelf (arranged alphabetically).

On CD.

The album is pretty legendary, but I didn't remember how good it sounds.

A wonderful album. Great composition, sequencing and showing what a master musician and producer Stevie had become. He played all or nearly all of the instruments on this album, imo masterfully. I still have the vinyl I bought when it first came out, and I really like the sound of the Audio Fidelity gold cd.

I'm a big fan of Joe Jones and have I think all his work.

I'm also a big fan of the lovely Barney Kessel Gibson model he plays here and on many releases. I got to play one for about a half an hour in the early 'nineties and I've never forgotten the "feel" of that guitar and how easily I was able to dial in just the kind of sound I like. But. . . they're damned expensive and have been for a long time.

Of all things, Slash, "Orgy of the Damned".

He has some really good singers doing covers with him.

I wouldn't normally be considered a fan, but this is pretty good.

Hi, Geno.  It looks like you are going through a "blues phase" the last day or so!

While I knew of Peter Green, and had heard his recording with John Mayall, I had not listened to a lot of him with Fleetwood Mac, and have not heard the "Black Magic Woman" album you posted.  I just listened to a recording on YouTube of the song "Love that Burns" (though perhaps from a different album), and thought it was very cool - a nice minor-key slow blues that includes horns, and with tasty guitar which is great without being showy.
Thanks for sharing it!

Hi Tone. Sorry for the late response.

It is impossible for me to respond on my iphone. I can use the "upload images" tab and post a picture, but if I try to type something, the thread times out, and goes blank. I dont have a computer at home, so, I can only respond when i'm at the office.

Peter Green was such an incredible player. He could play very aggressively, but had the best touch, playing slow. He was the most pure, BB King disciple.

For slow blues, check out "Need Your Love So Bad" and "Jumping at Shadows".

More aggressive, check out "Watch Out" and "Stop Messin' Round"

To highlight the rhythm section, "Long Grey Mare" and "Black Magic Woman"

Go to another dimension - "The Green Manalishi"

The cool thing with this era of the band, is that not only did you have Peter, but you had Jeremy Spencer playing slide guitar - an Elmore James disciple. A flipside of the blues coin, if you will. Check out "My Heart Beat Like A Hammer".

And when they added Danny Kirwan on third guitar, it is just on another level.

If that isnt enough, you have one of the best rhyhtm sections there ever was.

Best,

Geno

Hi, Geno.  No apology needed for "late reply."  The nature of this message board is people (including me) respond on their own schedule, and when they have something they want to say, so I think no reply is ever "late."  I appreciate your posts with or without a reply (but I liked all the extra info you provided).  So, I think the next time I order some CDs, I will probably be looking for some Fleetwood Mac with Peter Green!

I also wanted to share some similar music.  When I heard "Love that Burns," I thought of the Otis Rush song "So Many Roads" which is on the compilation with Albert King, "Door to Door:"

The BB King reference made me think of another great guitarist who is still active, Anson Funderburgh, who was clearly influenced by BB King.  One of my favorite recordings of his is "Sins," which actually has a wide range of guitar work:

Finally, I also checked out some Boogaloo Jones on YouTube.  Thought it was an interesting recording that sounds bluesy but has more diverse structures that I think more of as jazz.

I enjoy your comments, Geno, but don't feel obligated to reply - I don't want to interfere with your work!

Peter Green did some solo albums that are worth exploring as well before he withdrew from the recording world.

And I would think that the "Fleetwood Mac in Chicago" 2 LP or expanded 2 cd versions would be of great interest to blues fans.

No biggie on work disturbance. I work for the state Wink

I work in Jackson, MS, for the Dept. of Transportation, and live in one of the smaller adjacent towns.

My God, of all the selections in the world, that you could have posted - Anson & The Rockets!!! They used to come to Jackson pretty regular, and we would see them in a certain club. This was starting in the late 80's and went on for 15 years or so. We prolly saw them a dozen times.

In the beginning, they had a white singer/harmonica player named Darrell Nulisch. He was really good, but went out on his own, and Sam Myers was his replacement. This could not have been a better match. They were soooo great!

They were just fantastic live, and the best representation is on their live recording, "At The Grand Emporium"(in Kansas City, I think)

Sam passed away some years ago. Im on the road quite a bit, all over the state for work, and found out where Sam was laid to rest. We paid respects several years ago. Picture is attached.

On a side note, lately we have been involved with the Mississippi Blues Trail organisation, making sure that each blues site is signed from a major road, so that the public can find it. This has been pretty interesting - everybody from Charlie Patton and Son House to BB King and Albert King. I knew where many of these sites were prior to this work, but pretty satisfying to get more involved.

Best,

Geno

Hello, Lon.  Thanks for the suggestion, I will look into that before my next set of purchases!

Hello, Geno.  Nice to know that we share some similar tastes in the blues!  I also remember there were at least two recordings with Darrel Nulisch.  And knowing that you live in Mississippi and are involved with the Blues Trail - I live in northern California, so am far from the center of the blues music world - thank goodness for recordings!

I did look at some online interviews by Anson recently, and he talked about the Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets live recording you mentioned, "Live at the Grand Emporium," as being both one of his best recording experiences (playing live, and expecting to get a good recording at limited cost) and his worst experience (Sam Myers had a cold, and they had do a lot of work they didn't expect to address the vocals on the live recording).  But the end recording was very good!

I forgot to mention one of Macs best albums - Then Play On. It leans a bit more towards hard rock. A classic. Especially the song “Oh Well”.

“Can’t help it, bout the shape I’m in
I can’t sing, I ain’t pretty, and my legs are thin
but don’t ask me what I think of you
I might not give the answer that you want me to…
 …..Oh Well…

Listening to Ron Levy's Wild Kingdom recording from 1996, "Zim Zam Zoom" which is billed as "acid blues on B3:"

At the time, I already had an album by "Wild Kingdom" which included a lot of well-known blues players.  This recording is something different, which is referring back to "soul jazz" or "acid jazz" recordings that (in my experience) are often organ-based groups playing bluesy jazz music, and I think performed for dance-oriented audiences.  I like this music!

The band includes musicians from blues bands, and musicians that I now know from jazz (like drummer Idris Muhammad).  Since buying this CD, I have gotten to know (and like) more of the acid jazz music.  I also note that Rudy Van Gelder, did the recording and mastering, as he had done for a number of notable jazz recordings.

This is one I have bought three times. The 2 LP set is gorgeous. The US cd was really nice sounding. Then I bought the Japanese SHM-CD version and was really surprised how superior it sounds to the US cd.

A marvelously recorded session played by real masters. And James created a deeply moving tribute to Billie--without singing like Billie at all or even arranging the material in a way that mimicked or echoed the way the material was done for Billie. A very impressive work.

I dug out the Deluxe edition of this one to listen to the "Detroit Mix" that Marvin submitted to Motown and which was rejected in favor of the remix that became the original release of the album.

It's a great alternate version. And this music in either form is just. . . amazing, masterful.

And this edition includes a bit more clearly the line that is also repeated by Donny Hathaway on his "Live" album and explains for me life and after-life and the cosmos: "Everything is everything." Smiley

This is the result waiting 20 minutes for my pickup order at the Cheescake Factory, which is right next to Barnes and Nobles. 😉  Why I haven’t owned this album up until now is beyond me.  Double LP 180g audiophile vinyl and cut from the original stereo flat master tapes in 2024.

Hello, Dominick.  Yes, I also have Journey, "Greatest Hits," but I don't think it involved the Cheesecake Factory!  Some of that music I grew up with, and I think the songs I liked best were from their early days in the 1970s (like "Lights").

And Lon, I also remember when Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" came out (though I have that on a "Best of" album for Marvin Gaye, rather than the full album).  He had an interesting career.

Yes--I have all his official releases--I'm a big Marvin fan. I love his ability to multi-track amazing self harmonies. (I don't have any Journey).

Just received my new Bon Jovi album “Forever” on Sunburst Vinyl.  There’s a bunch of good songs on the album, and a bunch that sound very similar to some of his old hits. The Sunburst clear vinyl is pretty cool to see, but it gets trippy when it’s spinning.

I'm apparently the only guy on earth who doesn't like Feetwood Mac's Rumors. Sorry, but Stevie Nicks sounds like finger nails on the chalkboard to me. But the old, bluesy(-er) pre-Nicks Fleetwood Mac is awesome. And this is pretty much all of it.

On CD.

I'm also not a fan. I hardly listen to rock at all any longer. . .and never was a fan of Mac after Peter Green.

What an incredibly small world we live in.  For example.  I watch a lot of Netflix and enjoy the Korean TV shows.  For one thing they have some of the best stereos in the background and it's fun to figure what I'm seeing but they also give me a window into their culture and how they might live (as much as any American TV show is comparable to real life).  What amazes me though is the times we live in.

I heard a song on a Korean TV show.  While it was playing I asked my phone what it was and then I was able to hear it in HD thru Amazon Music.

What a world
