CAJAMES…yes I bought Live at Shelly’s Mane Hole, and a Judy Garland cd called “Live in Lost Vegas”.  Sadly the Schiit DAC’s don’t handle DSD, so I’m stuck.  When the time comes, my next DAC will have that capability.

Good stuff Dom.  So are you getting CDs? Do you ever play files? Looking at your gear it isn't clear how you'd do that, I guess attach a disk to your raspberry pi.

James,

Yes I bought the CD’s.  I have an Oppo CD/DVD player that is attached to my ZSB.  I can play files as well… I have a laptop attached to my Raspberry Pi that ties into my DAC.  Need to update my tag line to reflect that.

Thanks,
Dom

Not for everyone and most especially not your typical fare, Lon.

Spent a lot of time on the road with these guys in the old days.
Amazing band if you're into an Outlaw Country vibe.

Early album, might be the first. First one to sell, for sure.

I just got this Jobim.

Lon, I can't remember if it was your recommendation or from some article I read about him on AAJ. I spend too much time there.

After some enjoyable streaming I ordered a CD. Could not easily locate new, so I bought two used ones. $4 per, not trusting used as much as I used to.
I was hoping for an LP, but those are nearly $100, used. Surprised.

Anyway, I am anxious to break this out, next.

I know I sound crazy. I have three or four thousand "new" LPs and CDs to play (guessing - it'll be a while before I even get through them and know what I intend to keep) and YET, I am still buying stuff.

Honestly, I need a break from the stack once in a while. I don't want that pleasurable task to turn into hard work for me.

I love "Stone Flower," I've probably posted it a few dozen times in this thread, so maybe that is where it hit you and prompted you to buy it. I have four different cd versions of this, my favorite being the Japanese "RVG Remastered" UHQCD version. Wink I get buying new stuff even if you have a big backlog--I've been doing that for about four decades. As long as I can eat and pay the bills. . . .

One aspect I love about "Stone Flower" is that the arrangements are by Deodata which adds an interesting element for me, and Deodata joins the master (Jobim) on either piano, electric piano, or guitar on all tracks and it's so cool to have them both playing piano, or both playing electric piano, or one playing guitar or one piano, fascinates and pleases me.

That Commander Cody is probably good. I listened to some of his stuff in the 'seventies. Since then very little stuff like that gets any play. I am not trying to be a snob but I'm just deeply into other musics now.

I am still seesawing between many genres that I have always loved.
Some I have worked at to understand that now tend to grab me, even though I feel "complete" with them at other times.

That complete feeling is fleeting, however.
My appetite has changed over the years and feeling complete never seems to happen as often as when I was younger.

Going now with a few from Kenny Burrell I just found, all CD.
I might be the youngest beatnik ever. This amazing music hits me that way.

Let's see, I don't wear a beret, hoody instead, but I do smoke a pipe on occassion, and I love avant garde art (just had a downtown fair to promote local artists and I loved it! Bought some.), I am more into literature and esoteric poetry than ever in my life (and that's saying something from a lifetime heavy reader), I like comfortable clothes and dare anyone to ... (OK, that might be more hippy) and I am my own style.
Yeah, I might be the youngest or is it oldest (?) beatnik left alive.

Grin

I love Kenny Burrell!

There is so much to enjoy and love about Kenny Burrell's art and work!

I have been into jazz so long (since I was about 17) that I can go back and enjoy all the types of music that I have had in my life. . . and most of it is . . .jazz! I have begun rereading a lot of books that I read in the first half of my life such as works of Dick, Miller, Chandler, A.A. Fair, Stout et al. Just the stage of life we are in I guess! And yes I have a great fondness for the Beats.

I'm a '55 baby and for me, Jazz all happened with windows opened upon that genre for me when I discovered "Bitches Brew."
Yes, that is not the pennacle of original jazz, but it got me interested. That album fed my curiousity to hellish levels.

I went further in and found "What? This guy has been doing this for twenty years.  Oh, WAIT! What? He's already famous?"
That was my introduction into jazz, around the time the album came out.
A stunner and my view is from the outside, looking in to what all jazz might be. I was a teen, as well.
I was not detered by friends enough to stop looking for more.

I was already into the heaviest rock I could find and living in my family, bluegrass was a common endeavor. My family made money playing bluegrass and country! A big conversation for later. Of course my folks played Dixieland styles, but that was just another form of swing style country to me at the time.

Jazz was something I kept to myself for the most part. I had to find a way to make a living making rock music, though, because I knew that!
And I did.

As I tried to explore, I found so many artists that had worked with and through Miles that I just kept blindly digging, even though, most, other than my father and a few of his friends, just thought along the lines of "Ok, one good song. The rest? Really? Nothing there!"

Those influences were wrong. There is more there!

It took me a long time to learn what I needed to know, and I still learn every day, but only one exposure to know I had found something worth a lot more exploring.

Miles was part of my entryway as well. When I came back to America from Africa in '71 at 16 or so I really didn't get into what was on the radio. I had been listening to African music and rock from the BBC and my parents' collection which was mostly Classical with some swing music mixed in. And in Swaziland I had been given three Atlantic mono jazz LPs by a volunteer my Dad directed who didn't like them--each volunteer got a box of Atlantic records as sort care package/gift. Those three (Charles Bell and the Contemporary Jazz Quartet "Another Dimension, Slide Hampton "Sister Salvation," and Leo Wright "Blues Shout") really got me started loving jazz and back in America I went to the library one day after school and borrowed "FIlles De Kilimanjaro" and "In a Silent Way" and became a Miles Davis nut, and like you followed him to Bird and Duke and all his sidemen and. . . I have been going that way ever since. Until my mid-twenties I was listening to Hendrix and the Dead and Jefferson Airplane etc. but after that. . .just jazz for the most part.

I will never find a way out I don't think. There's always more to learn about and experience.

This is one for those who are practiced in the art of listening to more difficult recordings. Great music, great to hear this quintet developing, early on in its brief life. I'm used to listening to similar recordings so I'm enjoying this a lot. Many another have complained online.

John Coltrane Quintet with Eric Dolphy "Evenings at the Village Gate" Impulse SHM-SACD Japan.

Lon,

Until you brought them to my attention, I had never heard of SUN RA ARKESTRA.  Today I received an email from SF Jazz reminding me who was playing there tonight, none other than...

Yes, the Arkestra continues on, led by Marshall Allen . . . who is almost 100 years old. I've been a Sun Ra fan since the 'eighties. I like his earliest stuff best, and I probably have 100 discs of his.

Lon, you post Mingus five or six times and I think, "Yeah, I need to dig some out."  Then I find another "squirrel" and I'm off to another interest.

Tonight I am going to spin a few.

We also have a downtown (city square blocked off all day) concert beginning near dark. Within earshot, but soft and before all that we have a firepit night planned. I have chicken marinating. My daughter is cutting veggies for the skewers.

I am headed out to get the fire going, shortly.

I still have not found a decent/affordable outdoor amp, so Mingus will be wafting through the open windows and into the evening air for tonight.
Got lucky with a coolish night.

Sometimes I get stuck in a Mingus mode and listen to a lot of Mingus discs . . . a binge. Right now, with the new amp, I'm cycling through familiar music of different sorts which will help me to evaluate the amp.

Speaking of outdoor amps I am not sure what your budget might be but I have used a Sabaj amp from China which was quite good sounding when you used the incorporated tone controls and had sufficient power--my exact model of course is not made any longer (they seem to add and subtract amps every year) but there are others out there to explore. Now these need to be handled with care, cheap connections etc. but the sound is better than the build.

I also have a chip amp made by DALAUDIO which is very good sounding.  About three times the price of the Sabaj, and with no features, just a plain ol' power amp, but really an amp that pleases, especially with a Decware or Bottlehead preamp (I've used it with both).

Anyone who likes Barney Wilen would love the two volumes that Proust released. And. . .fantastic engineering and mastering.

This disc has become stuck in my PS Audio transport. . . and my attempts to remove it have made it even worse. I am going to have to get some all thread rod and try to get the top of the unit off. I'll be listening to LPs for a while!
