Lon, I like the Grateful Dead box set. Out of my price range at the moment for media budget. Sounds like you have not popped it yet?

I have three or four dozen Grateful Dead LPs and CDs and most are live from somewhere. Most repeats are only barely similar to another. I only have one double from MSG, though.
Only a few studio recordings and that may be the way they wanted it to be.

Allowing anyone and everyone to record their many concerts was marketing genius!
Care to ponder how many people with sub-par nostalgicly treasured recordings go out to buy their albums, still?

Long, strange, indeed!

I listened to the first set of the first '81 show in the box. I generally don't listen to or collect Dead after Keith and Donna Godchaux left and I really am not a fan of Brent. . . but this looked like a nice box set and I have bought all their official product up to '78 and decided I would try this one out.

I am reminded WHY I stopped at '78 but there are some pretty good moments on this disc.

I was a Dead fan until Keith and Donna left. I saw one last show with Brent and then quit following them until my first wife came down with lymphoma and I found collecting shows and making artwork etc. was therapeutic and did a lot for me, especially with long waits in hospital waiting rooms and clinic chemo suites. My enthusiasm has waned some since and I haven't even listened to the last few years of "Dave's Picks" I subscribed to. In fact due to the weirdness of Dead.net customer service I ended up with 3 subscriptions to this year's subscription and I'm likely to sell two once the last one is released, should be next month.

Carmen was such an interesting singer. I hear Billie a bit more than usual on a few of these numbers here. And no one ever made a better interpretation of an Alice Cooper song.

As is probably obvious from my posts, I adore Michael Brecker's playing, and so I've only heard bootlegs of this until now. I miss him. Such a treat to hear some of this properly for the first time.

They are cassette sources, but they were able to use the Plangent Process on them and this really helps.

Sun Ra "Universe in Blue" Cosmic Myth Records cd 2022

A lot of cool Sun Ra organ. He gets some very neat sounds on this blues album. My favorite the organ sounds like a cross between a B3 and a Clavinette.

Sound is nicely live and dynamic and generally quite good. On the vocal number the horns backing the singer are very under-recorded--you have to really listen for them. But even that is kind of cool.

1972--the bonus material is from Slug's, the original release is purported to be from Slugs.

Reply #22382 - 10/14/22 at 18:27:49 "The Complete Vee Jay Lee Morgan-Wayne Shorter Sessions" disc 2 These VeeJay jazz sessions (and the Wynton Kelly and Paul Chambers ones as well) are so interesting as the production and recording and general "vibe" are distinct, differing from Blue Note (mostly) and other labels work by these cats. A nice change of pace.

Got our first substantial snowfall last night (first snowfall was Monday night) and lost power for a few minutes and had no cable or internet from 6 a.m. til noon. Glad it came back!

First I listened to:

Billie Holiday "Lady Sings the Blues" Universal SHM-CD 2022

This one really works well as an "album." I love Billie. My dog sank into a deep sleep the moment I put her on. . .almost every time. I think that means she loves her too.

Then:

"Lee Wiley Sings the Songs of George Gershwin and Cole Porter" . . . I have neglected revisiting Lee Wiley for too long.

Finally, right now:
Joe Henderson "Mode for Joe" Universal Japan SHM-CD 2022. This is a repressing of the fabled SHM-CD that had an alternate totally new until the Mosaic set came out. Got this and the Billie Holiday in a nice box from cdJapan yesterday.

I've always loved that album! Long time favorite.

I was not alone, though. Many "goers" loved it as well.
Never seen that version, but I have several in various formats.
Need to dig more deeply into my electric music as things progress.

I've been spinning vinyl a lot in the past days.
I generally prefer Haydn over Mozart for string quartet work, despite critics.
