The last album I got to listen to last night. The Japanese RVG mini-lp version.

Anthony (Tony) Williams "Spring" Blue Note cd Japan.

I'd forgotten how involving this album is--from the first brush strokes in I was captivated yet again. Tony with Ron Carter, Sam Rivers, Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock. Wow.

These Japanese RVGs are really sounding good for the most part on my system as it is now configured. I'm looking for more. On a jazz board I just purchased eight nicely priced ones I didn't have that I should have in a week.

Finally had a day to myself after a week of Lucy being off work and full of first anxiety and then grief over her sister's hospitalization and passing. Sigh. It's tough. We're both now at an age where family members and friends are leaving us. It's something you don't want to get used to.

I had an issue with one silver wire I use as a jumper to connect the ribbon tweeters on my speakers and replaced an internet bought cryo treated silver wire with Duelund silver hookup wire on both speakers, which made a subtle and interesting difference to the sound. It was a task necessarily done carefully and a bit stressfully, but I got it done. So I listened to a few cds that I know very well to assess the sound:

Antonio Carlos Jobim "Stone Flower" CTI Supreme Series Blu-Spec CD from Japan
Carmen McRae "Carmen Sings Monk" Sony Blu-Spec CD2 from Japan

Then I listened to:

Serge Chaloff "Blue Serge" TOCJ cd from Japan
Duke Ellington "Soul Call" Verve Universal cd from Japan
Keith Jarrett Trio "Bye Bye Blackbird" ECM cd

What a relief it was to have music playing disc after disc. Couldn't chronicle it as it happened as I had a lap dog rather than a laptop. . . .

I was just looking at my Japanese RVG copy of "Cat Walk," an album I love, and almost put it on but decided instead on:

"Blue and Sentimental," Ike Quebec Japanese RVG lp facsimile Blue Note cd. Man this sounds great! I hadn't heard the album in a while, and it deserves the fine reputation it has.

I am really growing fond of these Japanese RVGs as my system really likes them these days, and I've been lucky to get about a dozen this year for good prices. A few have covers beat up a bit but I don't care. The sound is what I'm after. Looking for more. . . I have exactly 40 in the LP facsimile fashion right now, a few more later reissues in jewel case.

Listening again to Hank Mobley "Workout" Blue Note Japan RVG LP facsimile cd.

Listening yesterday led me to remember how often my best and oldest friend and I listened to this in the early 'nineties and marveled at the music and the sound. That's what I love about the quality of my system--I can instantly connect to memories and the music, the better the system becomes the deeper and faster the connection. Reminding me yes, I'm an audiophile, but I really am driven by music. I don't know what I would do without music in my life. I'd be someone completely different, that's certain. .. .

Good LP finds! Dr. John was an interesting cat. I enjoyed re-listening to his Armstrong tribute cd last week.

Yesterday I spent the day with my Dad, taking him in for some tests, having a leisurely lunch, looking around futilely for some no-sodium or really low-sodium bread he can eat, and then on to a dermatology appointment. (He loves this doctor, but in six years I've taken him about fifteen times and not once were they ever "on time"--the closest they have ever been is seeing the doctor thirty minutes after his appointment time, yesterday it was one hour and twenty five minutes after his appointment time the doctor walked into the room--something is seriously wrong in the way that office is run!)

On the way there and back I listened to two albums that keep popping up on a listening thread on a music forum I haunt: Ron Miles "I AM A MAN" and "Jack Wilkins" on Mainstream.

As he has before, Ron's playing reminds me of a more abstract Wynton, and his composing as well. A nice album; I could do without the concluding Frisell Freak Out.

The Wilkins is very good. The third track doesn't thrill me but the others are excellent. Great guitar sound he gets.

Today I have listened to the Ron Miles again, sound so much better on the main system. I've also listened to the Verve cd "Coleman Hawkins and his All Stars at Newport," which is a nicely recorded and tight Newport set for the ages, and Duke Jordan's "Flight to Jordan," Blue Note Japan RVG LP facsimile edition. I always enjoy this one, his only leader date for Blue Note--Dizzy Reece and Stanley Turrentine have made great music together when they are recorded as a front line. They "blend" so well.

Just finished listening to this magic recording. The recording captures the mood of the music so well. It's very dry as far as it is close miked and little room sound and certainly no reverb added, and yet the piano's soundboard is resonant and the contrabass violin is presented as if you were very near to it (I have one, love these instruments). And Chet's vocals and microphone technique may be an acquired taste but I acquired it some time ago. And his trumpet playing seems so pure and direct here. My hat is off to the engineering, and the K2HD mastering really helps here I believe.

I find it very interesting how many brass players that sing seem to have a singular "voice" on both instruments. I'm thinking of Chet, and Louis, and Jack Teagarden and Ray Nance, these four in particular. Their singing seems to mirror aspect of their playing, in very good ways. I love all four of these singers.

No digital image online that I can find really captures the beautiful aquamarin-ish color of the disc sleeve I have. This one is closer than some.
