New and improved magnet for F-15

I was on audiokarma earlier and read the following in a message from Lii Audio to a fellow waiting to receive his overdue F-15’s:

There is a good news that for these F-15s you are waiting for, we have upgraded the magnet with better quality and sound remakably improved

I noticed that Lii no longer offers the 10" Crystals and the 10" Silvers dropped to $1199.

Hi Geno,

Question about your Crown XLS 1002 W15 set up. With the crown you run them in stereo. Do you use DSP with them? Could you elaborate your set up with the Crown XLS 1002.

Thanks

jec,

Palomino got me going with the Crown setup some time ago.

The W-15's are connected like normal to the speaker terminals on the Crown.

Then you connect a single wire from each positive speaker terminal (on whatever your main amp is), and the other end has a resistor in-line, soldered to the positive pin of an RCA connector, and connected to each input on the Crown.

The resistor we used is an OHMITE 41F600E, 600 OHM, 1W, 1% that we got on ebay.

As far as DSP goes, if you are referring to what is built in to the Crown, I have the crossover filter set to low pass, and the crossover point set by ear(generally somewhere between 80 and 200 hz), in conjunction with both left and right volume level controls. The input sensitivity is set to Normal.

If any of this is not clear, let me know, and I'll try to clear it up.

Best,

Geno

-  Hi Geno, I really enjoyed watching all of your videos, and your speaker design is really nice!

-   I noticed that you have a great collection of Sansui Amplifiers that you had used in your different videos with the Lii Audio Speakers, they sound really good.  Have you tried any other brands too, like Marantz , Yamaha , Pioneer , Harmon Kardin , Luxman , etc - Just wondering about any comparisons? - ( I am thinking of looking for a vintage amplifier of some kind)...

-  I didn't see any videos with you using your Decware Amplifier on your Lii Audio speakers???  - Do you prefer the other amplifiers on those speakers?

Thank you, Hallcon.

I am all in with Sansui. I ended up with the little AU-222 on a whim, and was floored by how it matches up with my speakers.

I have not compared other classic brands, and with the Sansui's I have, don't feel the need to. Depending on how efficient your speakers are, these low watt Sansui's work great, and are inexpensive compared to the higher watt models.

After using the Sansui's, It is harder to go back to my tube amps. I think that I now understand why the Zrock is so popular, as I guess it adds the bass ooomph that is missing.

Don't misunderstand though - I love the SE84UFO, and have a second on order, so that I can run a fully balanced monobloc setup.

Best,

Geno

Hello Hallcon and Geno,

Glad to see others' interest in some vintage SS gear in addition to Decware. I, too, enjoy both.

I haven't heard the small wattage Sansui gear but everything I've read says they are very sweet sounding and somewhat tubelike. I was recently stationed in Japan and looked for Sansui but didn't find what I was looking for in the right condition.

I did find a Pioneer Exclusive M4 (50 watt pure class A) that was only available in Japan. Most similar Pioneer released to USA was their highly acclaimed M-22. The M4 is quite a step above, being in a Brazilian Rosewood case with large VU's and 50W instead of 30. The M4 sounds fantastic and works wonderfully with my CSP2+.

I also found an Accuphase E-303, which is a 130 watt MOSFET integrated. The phono and preamp is excellent. This is biased to stay in class A for at least the first 10 watts. Again, highly recommended.

I also picked up a Luxman LV-105, which is 70w MOSFET with tube gain stage. This is probably considered the best from Luxman's lesser desirable period of the 80's. Again, sounds great and has well respected phono.

Lastly, I picked up a Kenwood KA-7050R which is 105w MOSFET. I alternate this and the Luxman for my stereo HT setup. Either would be more than good enough for most as main stereo, but neither are up to the Pioneer or Accuphase. Keep in mind though that the M4 and E-303 are considered absolute top-tier for their timeframe.

Lastly, I also have a MAC 1900. As I am still in transition from Japan to permanent duty station, I need to play with this some more before I can say much. I enjoyed it when I had it hooked up, but did no A/B. Also, volume knob is a weakness on this model: scratchy, channel imbalance at low volume, serves as on/ off switch so prone to wearing out.

If you have specific questions about any gear I've mentioned, please ask. From my experience, most vintage (70's) Japanese gear was quality. Most brands had premier lines or models that are worth looking for. Differences tend to be better circuit boards (glass epoxy), transformers, noise isolation for pre, etc... http://www.thevintageknob.org is an excellent resource for general recommendations, specs, and internal pics.

Thanks, Jon.

With 2W15's your zen amp sound thin?

jec,

I would not say “thin”, but the Sansui’s just have this really punchy bass that is addictive.

But, there is an update now - I’ve just added new speaker cable to my SE84/Spud monobloc setup, and it has elevated the sound. Steve has always stressed upgrading whatever the ‘weakest link’ is in your audio chain. This definitely includes all cables, as I thought my speaker cable before was great. The new cable has added depth and resolution to the tube setup. Much better!

Fantastic Geno,

Happy to hear that. Received an usb cable and 18" Hi-End 8AG Silver Plated OCC 16 Strands hifi Audio Cable RCA interconnect cable from that supplier. After testing the usb cable vs audioquest usb forest ordered the speaker cable and more. Haven't tested the rca interconnect yet but, seems really nice. Stiff cables for sure.

Hi Dean.

This is the link to one of Steve’s recent recommendations for speaker cable. And now mine too, as it has made quite a difference in my setup:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/8ag-Pure-Silver-plated-OCC-Hifi-Speaker-Cable-Hi-end-Sp...

For interconnect cables, I’m using Steves latest offering. They are very good.

And Decware’s power cable is recommended also.

All of these cable offerings are a real bargain - great performance at a very affordable price.

Best,

Geno

Dean,

Just basic audioquest  interconnect cables. DYI 12 gauge copper speaker cable. Picked up this speaker cables also. Haven't tested it yet. More interconnects are on the way from that ebay dealer. Something to compare.

I'm on the live and learn program. Price was right and free shipping. They FedEx the speaker cables, took 7 days. The other orders were a little slower.

Hi Joseph.

They are very good speaker cables. I also recently got the equivalent interconnect cables with their best connectors. I like them enough that I will be getting more to replace some of the others that I have.

Best,
