Hey Lon, does your Decware amp have a treble control?

Oh hell yes. I  can't live without it. In storage I have another Mk III with the treble cut circuit, as well as a Mk II that has the treble cut circuit. One of the best things about Steve's amps imo. He can put it on many amps (the fact he told me he cannot put it on the ZMA was one main reason I've never tried to get one). It's a little known secret, but it's innovative and really effective, I would put the treble cut circuit and the ZBIT as his unsung masterpieces of simplicity and successful implementation.

Lon, have you found any tubes that cut down on the high end side?  I sort of see tubes as another form of adjusting EQ.  Thankfully, I have ears of tin, but of all the frequencies, the treble is the most offensive to me.  I go to a gym a few nights a week and they have music piped in through their tinny speakers and ouch, it hurts.

In general, and with amps that don't have the treble cut circuit or tone controls I find that with input tubes the 6N1P tubes have warmer, a bit softened top end. With the treble control I am able to use the very best input tubes for the Torii, which I find for my system to be Amperex 7308 tubes.

For power tubes in the Torii I find that Winged C E34L and KT66 tubes have treble that is easier to live with. And in the two watt amps I find EL84 a better fit.

Of course cabling is another way to achieve this. . . it's kindof a crap shoot but some cables help high frequency well, some crudely and not so well.

To be honest I think if it were not for the treble cut circuit (which I first had on a Rachel amp) I would probably have moved on to another amp manufacturer as in my rooms and systems Decware front ends and amps are just too bright otherwise. That may be my hearing: I still hear very well into the high frequency range, and one audiologist i talked to told me I may have a type of hearing where high frequencies cause discomfort that others don't hear. However that may be, the treble cut circuit is a great boon to system building.

Yup agreed Lon.

That's why I have gone 30k tweeter padding resistor on the RT1C-A in the Mk II.

I agree, I will never let go of the Torri 3 for the same reason. The torri is the ultimate chameleon and can change to any room requirements.

Lon,

What do you use for interconnects? Decware silver or the Decware copper(DSG)?

Corey.  :)

I used to use Decware interconnects and speaker wire but there was an edginess to the sound in my system that I couldn't relax into and it went away when I tried different interconnects. I used cryoset.com Version 2 for some time but moved on to VooDoo Cable, first Evolution and then Ultralinear, then moved on up to the top of their line, Stradivarius (bought used or as demos from the then owner, significant savings). Then when I had to come up with an XLR interconnect to use with the ZBIT I settled on a very good one, the Take Five Audio (Canada) "Deluxe XLR"--it's a lot like the VooDoo cable interconnects, using similar wire and also cryo treating.

Probably will be selling the cryoset.com cables one of these days, three or four pairs.

How much you wanna sell (2) pair of cryoset for? Provided they are 1 meter in length each.

Corey. . . I'm not sure whethere I have two pair of 1 m, I think I may have one of 1 meter and the others are longer, 1.5 and 2. I don't know quite where they are in my storage unit right now and I'm not quite ready to dig around and sell them. I'll keep you in mind for when I do.

Lon,

When you want to sell,  I'll take the 2 meter pair. I am making my own loop through a PEC 10k potentiometer and Allen-Bradley resistor shunt. I will be applying my own lockable ends and 2 meters would work wonderful!

Okay, I'll let you know when I want to sell. May be a while, I'll probably sell as snake pit of power cables I have first, and a CSP2+. . . .

Lon,

Did you ever try the Decware PILL or do you just rely on the tone control for digital?

No I have not tried the Decware PillS. I've found my tonal place with tube-rolling and cables and the controls on the Torii Mk III, and the icing on the cake for me was adding the ZBIT. I'm in good shape, not going to add another device, that pretty much runs counter to my taste and I'm not going to buy more interconnects..

I think Lon and I were cut from the same cloth.  I will never give up my Torii 3 with its treble shunt.  It is a "must have" for most high-efficiency, full-range, crossover-less, single driver speakers.

I too use NOS Amperex 7308's as my fav 6922 type so far.  the 6N1P's are definitely "warm"... most 6N1P's don't "drive" the Torii output tubes fully either - verified w/Steve.  I just got some of those Shuguang Chinese 6N11/6922/6DJ8 Steve recommended right before Christmas, but I haven't even had time to plug them in yet and see if they work - let alone "how they sound".  I believe Steve mentioned they have more "drive" than the 6N1P's they used to supply, but "sound" like the 6N1P's.  I think others on this forum have already taken them for a spin - perhaps they will chime in.

If you want some wire that tends to have a nice smooth, perhaps some would describe as a somewhat "relaxed" sound, especially in the top, without taking out a second mortgage for a "piece of wire" - get some Audioquest Diamondback or King Cobra.  These can be bought new from AQ certified dealer Music Direct for not a lot of jack$.  They are built extremely well, and have some of the smoothest connecting RCA jacks you'll ever have the pleasure of sliding onto your components.  ;)
