They are really good. I've only ever heard vinyl that had had heavy play, and the cd masterings are good, but the SACD really shine in the way that SACD CAN shine, which for me is mainly a more vivid dynamic contrast, and a very open but not harsh high frequency range.

They also made a point of recording great music with outstanding soloists, orchestras and conductors. And that pays off.

Since I moved my Denon DCD-A100 to Dad's system I'm listening to a lot of SACDs and Redbook also sounds excellent sent via coaxial from the CL-5 into the Denon's excellent 32 bit DAC section.

Right now listening to disc 7 from this 8 SACD set.

Beautiful sound. I would say I prefer the Vegh Quartet performances by a hair, and especially love their cellist, but the sound and the ensemble playing on this cycle is exceptional. And I think I paid less than 40 dollars for 8 SACDs.

One interesting thing about the nearly two years I've spent listening with my parents to mostly classical music. . . . This has shown me real quality and real lasting beauty in music. It makes me listen to a lot of rock and pop and see this as fun but also ephemeral. And I see the influence of a lot of classical composers and performers in jazz and other genre artists I've admired in the past. I especially see how pervasive the influence of Chopin, Beethoven, and Mozart's piano works, and their most amazing interpreters, have been on jazz pianists.

I`ve just reset my arm again. Found the page with the arm measurements which says from centre of record, effective length ( to needle tip) 222.5mm. I was 10mm out apprx :-[ Sorted now and again the music sounds extra glorious.

Reply #6740 - 01/24/15 at 04:24:36 Watching the Showtime film "Lost Songs" about the project to write songs for Dylan lyrics that hadn't been turned into songs before. The cd is excellent and the film is very good. Beautiful guitars, especially a killer Barney Kessel model Gibson and a great Ampeg bass.

Reply #6742 - 01/24/15 at 15:00:59 Keep coming back to this one, I don't like a lot of music sort of like this, but the Dylan angle is a good foundation and there are some excellent performances here. I think T-Bone deserves a lot of credit for getting the mental and physical environments right.

This morning I've started the music with another CD from my buy Friday at HPB&R. I have to admit that I haven't listened to much Carmen McRae but this is wonderful. Not many would take on the Billie Holiday associated song "Strange Fruit" back in 1961 when this was recorded. Carmen has a different sound than my favorites that makes me want more.

Lon, I remember you listening to her on an album called "American Songbook"...tell me about it. Any other McRae winners you'd care to share? Mark.

Mark, I'm a big Carmen fan. She's a great pianist too though that's rarely recorded.

I like all her work up through the early sixties, and after that I'm more selective. . . I don't like her attempts to be contemporary and so stick to total jazz dates only on the later records.

Any of her Decca and any of her Atlantics through the early sixties are recommended.
