Billy Strayhorn "Lush Life" Red Baron cd

A cd with varying ensembles and solo piano that I haven't pulled out in too long.

All Music says:

Although not initially released until 1992, 25 years after composer Billy Strayhorn's death, this is his definitive CD. Strayhorn is heard singing "Lush Life" while backed by the Duke Ellington Orchestra in 1964 (his voice is not strong but his phrasing is quite sincere), jamming on piano with flügelhornist Clark Terry and Bob Wilbur (on clarinet and soprano) in a quintet, backing singer Ozzie Bailey, and taking a pair of piano solos ("Love Came" and "Baby Clementine"). These are very valuable and intriguing recordings, shedding some new light on a nearly invisible genius.

The way the system sounds today made me want to hear this Tatum material again--it is so well mastered that listening to these three masters seems such a joy.

Billie Holiday "Lady in Satin" Centennial Edition, Columbia/Legacy 3 cd edition, disc 1

This is a sad album, I don't play it often because. . . it was Billie's last release and sad but powerful in its way, deserving of the praise and attention it receives.

This three cd set has a lot of extras: outtakes, alternate takes, even a performance from Sound of Jazz. Also the presentation of the original release here sounds perhaps the best I've heard digitally.

A wind storm disabled cable and internet for 20 hours. . . my wife and I were withdrawing and finally eased our internet and cable addiction by watching hours of "Ballykissangel" on DVD.

Listening right now to a bunch of outtakes from Grateful Dead's "Wake of the Flood" I was sent by a collector years and years ago. Probably my favorite Dead album.
