I never got into the Grateful Dead growing up… but once I saw them live from working at the Giants Stadium, I really enjoyed their music. I’ve logged in close to 50 performances while I worked there over the span of 15 years.

Summer has finally come to the Central Coast and we're having our first heat wave, so I put on some cool jazz. I can't think of anything cooler than Bill Evans Live at the Village Vanguard, although some might argue Birth of the Cool is cooler. But this sounds a whole lot better. YMMV.

On CD

It has always been funny (to me, at least) that a lot of audiophiles say they want their systems to reproduce "the sound of live music." I've heard a fair amount of jazz in clubs but none of it sounds as good as these recordings from my listening chair. There is the gestalt of a live performance that can't really be recorded, but that is different than sound quality.

I've listened to Bill Evans at the Village Vanguard so many times since the 'eighties that I haven't reached for it in a long time. I can see a pic of the releases and it plays in my head!

Right now different, bluesier piano trio recordings, a recent release, that I really like.

Les McCann "Never a Dull Moment– Live from Coast to Coast (1966-1967)" Resonance Records 3 cd set, disc 1

These sets of trio recordings are a very rewarding listen, for me. Nicely recorded and mastered--not pristine studio recordings, but nicely rendered live recordings.

Haven’t played any vinyl in the past week…so I decided to dust off the records and play some Eddie Higgins Trio. Sadly….there must be a copyright issue going on with Qobuz because my Eddie Higgins Trio playlist is no longer available to stream, except for like two albums. Thank God I own all of his albums on vinyl, so can at least still enjoy his music.

Dominick, that is terrible news.

I made a decision a few years ago not to go vinyl, and for the most part, it has been a good decision so far. Hopefully, the Eddie Higgins Trio will make a comeback to Qobuz; incidentally, it is not available on Spotify either.

That particular album and album cover that you showed is one of my favorites. I sometimes think that the scene is a bit of a Rorschach, "Tell me what you see going on for each one of the individuals pictured?" kind of thing.

For backup, I have a CD player that I got from Lon some time ago. My collection is small, but now I have a reason to search and perhaps add to it. If anyone has an extra CD version of the album pictured and would be willing to part with it, please let me know.

That particular album and album cover that you showed is one of my favorites. I sometimes think that the scene is a bit of a Rorschach, "Tell me what you see going on for each one of the individuals pictured?" kind of thing.

For backup, I have a CD player that I got from Lon some time ago. My collection is small, but now I have a reason to search and perhaps add to it. If anyone has an extra CD version of the album pictured and would be willing to part with it, please let me know.

Hey Tony… This album is one of my favorites as well. Most of the Venus label album art covers are just not good. This one is actually pleasant to look at. The guy with the glasses reminds me of the “Pappy Van Winkle 15”bottle of bourbon that I have been trying to acquire for the past 10 years. I call it my unicorn bottle. The retail price is not that bad but the secondary market is just outrageous for this small batch bottle of bourbon produced by the Buffalo Trace distillery. I refuse to pay the street value and I’ve tried to win at various auctions over the years. Most people that acquire it actually just flip it for a profit.

Right now I keep my vinyl collection for albums that I really love that I want to experience in an analog format. Here’s a pic of the Pappy 15 for reference.

Hereafter…..thanks. I do have Spotify and play their music when I am in my car. When I’m listening to music on my reference system at home… I normally play music through Roon due to the exceptional audio quality I get. Sadly… Spotify is not an option right now for Roon. I am hoping that when Spotify comes out with Spotify HiFi…then maybe they will become Roon compliant. I also do you have a Sonos system setup on my first floor both inside and outside… so I do get to enjoy his music.
