"Jazz Party" again--ten minutes in we lost power. . . took a few hours for it to be restored. Nothing immediately caused it here. . . it was a neighborhood loss somewhere upstream.

Sure got warm for a spell! We each left and ran errands and performed a few chores. . . and now we're beginning to "chill" as the temperature indoors has dropped somewhat.

This LP sounds so good. I have a nice sounding stereo LP as well now, but . . . the mono just swings hard!

Erroll Garner "The Complete Concert by the Sea" disc 1

This release continues to fascinate me. I had earlier versions of this acclaimed and extremely popular release, but not only is the complete, twice as long as previously released, concert here, but the extraordinary Plangent Process has been used to TRANSFORM the sound here.

And if I had a time machine I'd go back to this performance night and revel in the delight. I am certain that visually Garner is as riveting and involving as the audio material is for me. He was one of a kind and like other great pianists I love to hear he is a master of a musical universe.

If you have been familiar with the other editions of this music the transformation of the sound is fascinating.

After Garner's bombastic pianism I wanted a bit of a "lazy river" sound. . . .

I have digital versions of this LP in stereo, but this mono Roulette LP has a rich sound of its own that I wanted to hear.

Jack Teagarden "Portrait of Mr. T"

Don Goldie was an excellent trumpeter and vocalist and is a real asset in the late Teagarden bands.

Lon has been pimping Ellington Indigos for as long as I can remember, probably as long as I've known him. So I finally bought it, and he's not wrong. It is a fantastic recording of fantastic music.

If I'm honest I'd say typically I like other peoples arrangements of Ellington's music, but this is really good.

I have a CDR of the HDTT version. On this one they have the sides reversed, side 2 starts off and then side 1. Having listened to this record for over forty years that BUGS me! The version sounds okay but the original LPs (mono and stereo) and the Impex gold cd sound better to me.

I can't say that I agree at all . . .I don't prefer others' arrangements of Ellington to the man's himself . . . that said a lot are credited to Billy Strayhorn and a lot of others are Strayhorn's uncredited. . . pretty sure that there are some Strayhorn arrangements on this one.

And his High Note cds are very well-recorded.

I've just been listening to Duke in heavy doses since the 'seventies. . . and his and Strayhorn's arrangements (and some done by the band by Mary Lou Williams and a few others way back when) are favored by me. I don't think I've heard another's arrangement of Ellington material in the modern age I prefer.

It's great that you feel that way. I'm just rather partial to artists' versions of their own material. I really can't say I enjoy a Monk tune done by Miles, Sonny, Redman, anyone, better than by Monk. But I'm not a classical head. . . so often exposed to so many interpretations of the work of a composer, most often without a reference recording by the composer. That may explain my locked in-ness on the original composer's versions.

Agreed.

I'm on to another Tom Harrell. His work captivates me and I often have to hear more than one at a sitting. I think it's in part because his "sound" is very like my best friend's on the trumpet, and I sense the connection.

Another one on High Note, by that same great working band.

A six disc set released Friday of three shows at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco in early 1991. Very good sound on this first one.

Followed by Kenny Davern, "A Night with Eddie Condon" Arbors Jazz cd. This is a live recording from 1971 led by Condon, not released until 2001.

The group included. guitarist Eddie Condon, trumpeter Bernie Privin, trombonist Lou McGarity, pianist Dill Jones, bassist Jack Lesberg, Kenny Davern clarinet and soprano saxophone, and Cliff Leeman, drummer.
