I listened to
Charlie Parker today from a four CD box set,
"Boss Bird, Studio Recordings 1944-1951)":

I think this is "BeBop" style jazz, which I have always found challenging. While still challenging, I think I am getting familiar enough with this to start really enjoying it - but it is not something I can listen to all the time yet!
Finishing up the evening listening to the second recording in the
Herbie Hancock "5 Original Albums" set,
"My Point of View" from 1963:

I like Herbie Hancock, and here he has some other musicians I am becoming acquainted with and also like (Grant Green, Hank Mobley). Based on some wikipedia research, I think this might be "Hard Bop" or "Soul Jazz," which I think are more direct and straight-forward than the earlier "BeBop" style - the more melodic presentation makes it easier for a jazz neophyte like me get a handle on this music more quickly. Good to finish up the evening!
