HDT v2 speakers
11/14/23 at 23:11:06

I listened to the HDT v2 speakers at Decfest & was pleased but they seem to be generating little buzz. I inquired about a padauk option & after 3 call backs from Sarah (thanks Sarah) was told it was possible at a significant up charge. How about that. Maybe when my SEWE300B is soup I’ll pony up.

A pair of Padauk HDTV v2 speakers arrived here in Monroeville yesterday. They are beautiful looking with a voice to match. I’ve been running these in with a pentode amplifier but listened to them for about an hour powered by my big Had to experience some localized WE300B atmospheric modifications.

While these puppies sounded nice at first blush, the HDT-v2 needed some seasoning before I wanted to listen to music through as opposed to the DNA 2 speakers sitting next to them. I received those before the last  Decfest & Mr. Ziegler told me they were the first built with the rear horn not wrapped with fabric covering. My wife on the other hand was quite impressed from the get go. At any rate these have really started to come around & sound much better than “nice” now. I sometimes have my eyes closed listening to a specific instrument & open them up to find myself looking way stage right or left because of the width of the sound stage. (Beyond the left or right speaker) So here’s some pics comparing the wood on the speakers. The cherry forte’s look like plywood.

They both look gorgeous!   Nice wood finish. I am thinking of making one of these Decware two speakers.  Leaning mostly towards the DNA2.  Can you or anyone else provide insight on how the HDT v2 sound and compare to the DNA2?  Many Thanks

I agree with Hearafter, both pairs look gorgeous. The HDT v2's with the Padauk look amazing.

They would look phenomenal with my UFO25 in Padauk and CSP3 (A-mods) in Padauk. Beautiful bookends to the pre and amp!

I'd also be interested in hearing your comparison of the HDT's and DNA's if and when you have time.
It may help me decide if I'd like to change up speakers in the future.

Anyway, good luck and enjoy all your speaker options!

Mr. Deckert would be the one to accurately characterize the difference in performance of these speakers. I wouldn’t want to influence anyone’s choices with my opinion. I will say that as much as I like the low bass extension of the DNA2 speakers that they don’t have the efficiency required to be driven to peak performance by my single ended 2A3 amp. I would think a 9-pin SE amp would only be a good match at reduced listening levels. The HDT-v2 speakers on the other hand require fewer watts to “rock my boat” so to speak. At the same time, the  HDT-v2 speakers seem to me to not grab the lowest notes with the same authority, but have the efficiency to really sing with a couple of watts. Please take this with a grain of salt as I live in my own little world and my grasp on reality is tentative at best. I tend to yell at my TV in disbelief when the news is on for example.

Thanks for the info.  Seems to be a common theme that the HDT’s don’t have the low end impact of the DNA2.  I was thinking about trying the Lii Song Fast 8, or silver 8 driver in the DNA2 cabinet making it a more efficient single driver speaker. Easier build as a bonus.🤔.  If it doesn’t work out I can sell the Lii drivers and buy the original set and caps. Only a couple hundred $ for the DNA2 drivers.

BlackBess,

Thanks for your take and opinion on the speakers. Gives me more info to digest.

Certainly, the right pairing makes all the difference with a low wattage amp.

My speakers (Zu's) give me great sound and go pretty low (30Hz) so I'm not lacking for anything except for slam when I really want it.

I made the conscious decision to go low power/high efficiency and knew I wouldn't be expecting high SPL levels going forward. They are rated at 101db (a little less real world I would guess) and are 16 ohm so the UFO25 does well but for those times when I really want to 'feel' the music, it would be nice to have my cake and eat it too.

I'm really happy with what I have now but the enthusiast in me is wondering 'what if'.
Thanks again for your insight.
