SE84UFO volume control options
02/16/21 at 06:53:12

Had a decware zen amp many moons ago and looking again.

Tell me more about the volume control options.

Which pots do you use in the amps, and are they the same in the 25th anniversary amps?

Do I understand correctly that you also sell them without volume control as an option?  Is it the same price or cheaper?

Thanks John

I have a pair of UFOs that I use as balanced monoblocks and I got them with stepped attenuators. Mostly because it is the easiest way to ensure both are at the same level (even though it turns out I usually have them wide open) but also cuz I figured in a amp where everything matters a discrete resistor has to be better than a pot. But it isn't like I've ever auditioned volume control options so JMO, YMMV ETC.

Thanks, are you using a pre?

I run a hornshoppe Truth preamp, and it is the most transparent pre I have used, so I am quite conscious of adding a volume control back into the signal path.

I do not have volume controls on my SE84UFO25.  I am not sure where Steve fixed them, but most probably, 80-90% of full volume.  I control the volume from the pre or the DAC if I go direct...

Yes, a Woo Audio WA22, and yes, I share your concern and that was another reason I went with the stepped attenuator. There is going to be a resistor there no matter what, I wanted it to be a discrete resistor, not a pot for that reason.
