Input tube related hum
10/17/19 at 03:05:04

My Mini Torii developed an annoying hum from the right. I first swapped the rectifiers to opposite sides but the hum persisted. Then I switched the inputs. Well damned if the hum didn’t move to the left side! I obtained this NOS 1970’s RCA 5814 black plate pair earlier this year. They’ve been running 24/7 since around April. They tested good but it seems this one didn’t last very long. Oh well.

When an input tube adds hum to an amplifier that was originally hum free, it is because the AC heater is leaking into the other elements inside the tube.  I had one just today that had 12dB of hum on one side only.
