Regarding the Pair of OA3 tubes by the transformer...anyone try other VR's in those slots?
I tried a pair of Raytheon OD3W...sound very good, and the meters register approx 5 points lower.  Now reading 23-24.

I've tried the OD3W's, OC3's and a few variety of OA3's.  I ended up happy with the OA3's.  Been a while since I rolled though so probably need to revisit  now that everything has an additional ~600 hrs since the last switch up.   Lovin an E288CC on high bias with an OC3 though with the OA3's in the back!   Rect. is the SE Aqua 284.

The forum member who tried this and had issues was Badwolf.  You might PM him.

The product page does list the EL84 as one of the two output tube types.

https://www.decware.com/newsite/SE84UFO25.html

and the manual:

https://www.decware.com/newsite/SE84UFO25manual.pdf

The manual does note that the Hazen Grid Mod is not activated with the EL84, but that is not completely prohibitive. . . .

I've used the EL84 with Zen amps before (Rev. A, C, Select) and with my Taboo Mk III and Mk IV, and with my current 25th Anniversary SE84UFO3 Monoblocks but though I've really enjoyed them in the earlier amps the stock tubes from Steve clearly sound best to me in the Monoblocks.

Same experience as Lons’ on the power tubes.  I have some TAD EL84STR that I used in my UFO2 for a time and tried them in my UFO25.  The stock power tubes are in for keeps.

I’ll ask Badwolf what tubes he was using and what Steve said.  He’s pretty experienced so I can’t imagine him trying something that wasn’t listed in the manual.

Just a FYI:
Had a channel balance issue last night. turned up the right channel to fix it to no avail. Then I realized the right side OA3 was not lit. Right channel milliamperers reading was 40. Left was 32. Plugged in a NOS RCA and all is well now...no warning at all on the bad tube..one day fine next day DOA.

Yes voltage regulator tubes die, too. You wonder whether the gas was seeping out or something else. There isn't any cathode to burn out. They could in theory last forever. But some go "poof."

BTW, BadWolf recommended that I try a new VR tube.  I did and was very impressed with the results.  More open sound for sure.  I really didn't think a VR tube would have that much impact.

RCA versus what I was using - Sylvania.  Has the slots in the top getter.

Cheap sound improvement.

After I saw myself on the list, I purchased some NOS tubes and now I’m worried that they will not work properly with the future EE84UFO25.
Rectification 5U4G Svetlana Black Plate
Output Russian Electron 6P14P-ER/6P14P-EP
Signal Russian 6N23P-EV/6N23P-EB
Voltage regulation Amperex 0D3, Visseaux 0D3, Marshall 0A3.
I need some help

I think all will work --the 6P14 is reputed to be very similar to the EL84. I do think thought that because of the "Hazen Grid Mod" in the amp that is not activated by the EL84 the 6P15-EV that will come with the amp is a better sounding tube in my experience.

I agree with Lon. All those tubes should work, but my (limited) experience with 6p14p tubes was not positive. I found 6p15p-ev and esp. -er types sounded much better.

So the best sound with “Hazen grid mod” is with 6P15P-ER and second 6P15P-EV.
Thank you!

I think the output tubes that Steve sends you with the amp will sound excellent.

I had a specific question that leads to a general one:

I had a Raytheon RK60 rectifier in my Torii Jr. that I’d like to try in a SE84UFO25.  I looked up the specs for the RK60, but couldn’t make out if it would be okay for the 25th.  Will this rectifier work for the 25th and, in general, if a rectifier works for the Torii Jr. would it work in the 25th?

One of the main reasons I ask is that after my Sophia Electric Aqua 274b arched and died in the Torii Jr., I called them and they said the Torii Jr. had 825 mA of current which was too much for the Aqua (even though I know some members have used the Aqua without issue in the Torii Jr.).

Thanks for any insights.

The short answer is yes, and yes. A RK60 is a souped up 5U4G and should be fine in any Decware amp.  There are two specs that determine whether a rectifier will "work" in an amp: The size of the first power supply capacitor and the DC current requirement. Most Decware amps have a 47 uF power supply cap, while the amount of DC current required increases with power. FWIW I'm not sure where Sophia Electric got 825 mA of current, that is huge. The manual says 280 mA, which is still considerably more than the Sophia's 160 mA rating IIRC. I believe a UFO needs 70 mA, but whatever it is it is a small compared to the PP amps.

Now, it is important to remember that the datasheet values are a minimum. Some tubes will perform at a much higher level, so when faced with operating a tube beyond the published specs you just have to ask yourself: do I feel lucky? Well, do ya?

Thanks, CAJames!

And, I did get that number wrong.  I knew it was higher than the Aqua was spec’d for but I think I confused it with another mA number out there.

Anyway, thanks for the reply - much appreciated.
