I'm stumped by what I saw. I have had crappy listening environments before, yet, non as small and cluttered as this. I shake my head. Obviously, his wife has locked him downstairs, and he has made the best of it.

Having had a similar situation in the past, the solution is near-field listening. There are a lot of similarities between near-field listening and headphones (which work almost anywhere).

Really, if all you had to work with was THAT room, then why wouldn't you be into phones? One of the ultimate experiences would be coming directly from the *balanced* phono amp, into the *balanced* phone amp, and then into *balanced* phones. I mean a phono cartridge is already a balanced design to start with. Go ahead, you got money. Spend a few grand on phones, and much more on the rest, and hey, your on top.
