Best to determine tube or ss in the design stage.

I have a few of these solid state tube replacements. They can stiffen up a guitar amp (less or no sag), and with some clever use of resistors can be made to sag a little bit like a tube.

You basically gain solid state reliability. I wouldn't say better or worse than tube, just another option.
