Well it is time to put this latest project to bed.

My initial impressions of this project is that it isn't the best thing I've ever built. But I will give the drivers time to break in. I might also play around with differing amounts of damping material in the full range drivers' enclosure.

The sound is a little hollow sounding in the midrange, possibly a little adjustment to the crossovers are needed.

I'm not disappointed but not raving about these yet.

Have you tried the speakers with the tweeters on the inside? Other than that I think they look great.

So when you build new speakers you need to build new speaker stands to go along with them.

I started cutting stuff out today trying to come up with a idea.
Slowly something is coming together. Shown is my rough idea, nothing glued together yet.
I will probably put the same cross pieces on the top sides also.
I'm trying to decide if I round edges, how to paint it, stuff like that.




There  sure is a lot of clutter in the background, mostly stuff to damp the insides of speakers.

There I was, just minding my own business when my neighbor, my retirement investment guy, came poking around my garage to see what I was doing. He knew that I built speakers, so he asked about if I could look at his old college speakers.
He said that he had some old Advent speakers that the foam surrounds had rotted off of them. So I quickly looked online and saw that there were cheap  surround kits available and somewhat reluctantly said that I would look at them.

Well a couple days later he dropped them off. The Advent's turned out to actually be Infinity RS 4000's with both the bass and midrange drivers roached.

Another quick search turned up a surround kit for both drivers and they were summarily ordered.

I then took everything apart, pulled drivers and possibly the most chintzy crossover ever out of the most surprisingly stunning conditioned 40 year old speaker boxes in captivity.

I thought about replacing the crossover components with new stuff but decided that the speakers probably weren't worth the time and money to do that. It didn't look bad and I had put power to it before taking it apart to check if the drivers would move and everything seemed ok.

I did start modifying the boxes though, they were as stiff as Kleenex held together with toothpicks. A bit of MDF has been cut up, lots of 45 degree cuts made and glued inside of the boxes to make them as stiff as a honeymoon pecker!

I'm now in Purgatory waiting for UPS to deliver the surround repair kit.
The boxes will probably get about eleventy seven coats of wax or perhaps a ceramic coating over the next few days whilst waiting then we will see if my skill set includes installing new foam surrounds and center caps that don't have dents in them. Wish me luck!

So I just ordered 2 Amp Camp Amps.
Like I need 2 more amplifiers.
Like I have the skills to build said 2 amplifiers.
Giving me access to credit cards isn't the smartest thing that my wife has ever done.
Probably money down the drain.
I will now need a preamplifier with XLR outputs and XLR cables.
Might as well build some speakers for them.
Bad decisions were made!

I started on my Amp Camp Amps today.
The first thing I need to say is that I have zero idea of what the hell I'm doing. Luckily there are step by step instructions online leading me through the process.

So today I populated 4 complete boards with all kinds of zip zap electric thingies. From years upon years of blueprint drawing and reading I can semi understand what the symbols on the print are, so I guess I have that going for me.

Currently I'm at a standstill because the chassis are in Customs Purgatory, something about needing some sort of commodity classification. Way over my pay grade!

Anyway, here are a couple of action shots:

So that's what I did today.

Well I kinda got antsy because I am currently waiting for the chassis of my amp project to clear customs, .

A friend had called me up the other day and asked me to come to his house and pick up 6 pcs. of oak planks, free to use in some sort or another of my endeavors.

So here I was with nothing to do and free wood leaning in the corner of my shed. Believe it or not I came up with the idea of building a pair of speakers! I know, a rather novel concept for me.

Well a design concept was stolen from Blumenstein audio, he has some pretty cool but so expensive (for what they are) speakers.

I then jumped on Madisound and ordered up the drivers (Fostex FE166NV2's) and binding posts that I would need to build them.
Believe it or not, they will be delivered tomorrow, a 24 hour turnaround, impressive!

I then grabbed up 2 of the planks and drew up myself a quick blueprint for what needed cut where.



And a hour or so later, Bob's your Uncle!



I will wait for the drivers before cutting any holes in the baffles. because you never know for sure that their sizes actually match their advertised dimensions.

So two projects coming together in tandem, always a recipe for disaster!
