Tannoy mercury v4 or fonken 4" single drivers

So we're talking tower vs bookshelf but I got a line on both under 400. What's my better bet for the decware se34i?

Sorry for all the novice questions.

Which driver in the Fonken?
Can you listen before purchase?

Probably pretty much a toss up between the two, except the Fonkens will most likely need a helper woofer/sub.

The owner is saying they don't do rock very well, so  I'm leaning toward the tannoy

I "get" single driver speakers, so I think these 3" uFonkens sound absolutely brilliant nearfield with a 12" sealed sub.

IME a larger single driver like the 4/4.5" can fill a room quite nicely with some help on the low end.

I'm still a little confused how to hook up a sub to the se34-i's 5 way binding post . Sorry, I'm new :/ haha

I'd pass on those, it has a CSS driver which has a low sensitivity (mid 80s) and you are mostly paying for the cabinets.
You or a friend with wood working tools and skills could build a pair out of Baltic Birch with Fostex drivers for <$200.

Tannoy it is. For a first hifi system and for the price, I guess I can't go wrong.

If a subwoofer has only RCA inputs you have to use an adapter, otherwise look for a sub (or sub amp if diy) that has speaker level inputs and run 2 pairs of speaker wire, one pair to the speakers and the other pair to the sub amp.
