274B and the Taboo
03/04/12 at 17:08:46

Although the manual says that the 274B is compatible with the Taboo, I'm a little worried about the first capacitor value after the rectifier since the 274B calls for a value of 4uf or less. I opened up my unit and found out that the cap value is 33uf, way beyond the 4uf. I guess this is the same as the Zen and CSP2+ (I have both also). My 274B is Sophia-branded, which I used in my Woo 6.
My units are all running Bendix 6106 right now. But guess what, the 6106 also requires 4uf in the first cap. I'm not worried about this considering the rugged construction of these tubes.

The ZEN manual also green lights the use of a 274B rectifier tube. Best to pop it in any or all of the amps to see how it does. I am sure it will be a lot different from the guided missile 6106 valve.

I have actually tried it on all of them for maybe an hour each. I just got my Zen last month and I even opened the unit to move the power transformer to the back as the tube won't set properly because of the bulge touching the endbell. I didn't take a look at the cap though.
It is going to work but it will shorten the life of the tube (according to the Sophia site), by how much, I don't know. And besides, I didn't notice a difference in sound.

I would stick a 5U4G or GB in there. I have had good luck with them.

I have tried an RCA 5U4GB on the CSP/Taboo. It makes my Zen run hotter ( to about 130F -taken with an IR thermometer) vs 120-124 with the 6106. It's probably because the 5U4 draws more current, 3 vs 1.7A.  I might try  a 5AR4.

I daresay it depends upon which one sounds best in the gear.
