Blows Against The Empire * Paul Kantner's Jefferson Starship
In 1970, while Jefferson Airplane was on break from touring, singer-guitarist Paul Kantner recorded Blows Against the Empire. This was a concept album featuring an ad hoc group of musicians (centered on Kantner, Grace Slick, Joey Covington, and Jack Casady of Jefferson Airplane; David Crosby and Graham Nash; and Grateful Dead members Jerry Garcia, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann) credited on the LP as Paul Kantner and "Jefferson Starship", marking the first use of that name.
This agglomeration was informally known as the Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra.

On Blows Against the Empire, Kantner and Slick sang about a group of people escaping Earth in a hijacked starship. In 1971, the album was nominated for the prestigious science fiction prize, the Hugo Award, a rare honor for a musical recording.

Was listening to this '59 recording of The New Glenn Miller Orchestra (I know it's not Glenn Miller, but the recording sounds nice) a little earlier, sitting and listening. But something in "String Of Pearls" reminded me of Nirvana (grunge band) and I haven't figured it out yet.
I replayed "String Of Pearls" five times, but I'm leaving this genre for a bit.

Going back to work in the garage until I fade for the day and I am prepared to play all my Nirvana via HDD until I settle this in my mind.
I like Nirvana, too.

My preference for the saxophone sound is very selective - Paul Desmond and Johnny Hodges on alto come to mind.  I had not heard Jeremy Mohney, and although I could not find "Dreams of You" on Qobuz, I found some of his other work and liked it a lot.  So many great musicians to discover.  It gives special meaning and purpose to "retirement."

I like many saxophone sounds, but I hear you on alto saxophonists like Desmond and Hodges who have a smoothed sweet sound. A new player with similar mellow sound (though far more progressive thought) is Immanuel Wilkins.

I do believe the real Tania Maria is wild. She always has great bass players with her.

Alto Saxophone, soprano saxophone – John Purcell
Drums – Walfredo Reyes, timbales
Electric Bass – John Pena
Guitar – Dan Carillo
Percussion – Frank Colon
Piano, vocals – Tania Maria

Talking about sax sounds, I have a deep love of baritone saxophone players.

For now it's a Hamiet Bluiett release.
After distractions during the first, I'm starting the second play at peace.

"Classic Black&White Jazz Sessions" 11 cd box set by Mosaic Records.

This fascinating handsome set has a wonderful booklet and I've been waiting for its release and to have it in my hands for what seems a long while. Listening to disc 1, which starts off with solo recordings by one of my favorite pianists, Art Hodes.

Gabor Szabo - Dreams (1968) [full album]
https://youtu.be/gr0XWmEbiMQ   HD 1080

This is one of his most haunting and beautiful albums, sometimes even leaning into classical but always soaring through with his mystical phrases and rhythms. A must listen from start to finish!

1. Galatea's Guitar (0:00)
2. Half the Day is the Night (5:40)

Miles Davis "Complete Live at the Plugged Nickel 1965" Sony Records (Teo Macero Edition, gold cds).

I love this set. The edits don't bother me--I also have the US unedited edition but this one sounds better to me on my system.

Teddy Wilson "1935-1936" Chronogical (sic) Classics  cd

Teddy Wilson's 'thirties recordings are among my favorites of the decade, with great singers and instrumentalists and with his amazing elegant and swinging piano. The solo piano sides are excellent as well. I have this material in several ways, but the Classics series presents them in really good sound and completely in chronological order--a great way to hear them.

Bob Dylan "More Blood, More Tracks" disc Five

I've been meaning to get back to this set, and my system sounds so good now that it sounds even better than it did before, even though I thought it sounded outstanding last time. Great music and music-making. And the right speed!

T̤e̤n̤ ̤Y̤e̤a̤r̤s̤ ̤A̤f̤t̤e̤r̤-- ̤S̤s̤s̤s̤h̤ ̤-̤ ̤1̤9̤6̤9̤ ̤ Full Album

All songs composed by Alvin Lee, except where noted.
Bad Scene – 00:01
Two Time Mama – 03:30
Stoned Woman – 05:33
Good Morning Little Schoolgirl – (Sonny Boy Williamson) 08:54
If You Should Love Me – 16:04
I Don't Know That You Don't Know My Name – 21:28
The Stomp – 23:34
I Woke Up This Morning – 28:04

Ten Years After
Alvin Lee – guitar, vocals
Leo Lyons – bass
Ric Lee – drums
Chick Churchill – organ

This Music IS the Music of Ten Years After

The major problem in being TEN YEARS
AFTER has been to record an album in
the studio Which has the same basic
effect that we find second nature to
create on a good live performance.

Up to this date, we have had three
previous album trips. The first was as a
result of getting a recording contract and
in the excitement of recording our own
music for the first time we feel we over-
looked a lot of the advantages the studio
could have given us.

Similarly on the second album “Undead”
which was TEN YEARS AFTER playing
live at a small club, recorded in one take.
The problem on this album was that only
the sound of what happened was
represented and l personally felt that the
visions and physical experience of a
tightly packed sweltering room were
missed when listening to the album,
giving and incomplete picture of the
whole event.

At this point we said “SIDE TRIP”; our
album will show what we can do in the
studio. This was “Stonedhenge,” not

particularly what we wanted to do, but
the way we did what we happened to
do. I still don’t know if this really worked.
All I do know is it kept the wolf from the
door and made some bread, enabling us
to pay the cost of hiring our own studio
and being more free than ever before
while recording.

We have attempted with SSSSH to lay
down the basic TEN YEARS AFTER
music at the same time create an
atmosphere which evolves more than
what is heard. A lot of things have been
left in, which previously technicians
would have hidden. We have attempted
to compensate for the lack of visions and
physical experiences by adding sounds
to the basic tracks. We have had a lot of
grooves and now we await what you
have to say.

Ssssh.
