Lon, that's funny that you say Duke is alright because that's the same impression I get. Some of his songs are good but overall he is alright. He seems to be thought of as one of the greats but I thought maybe I've been missing something. The same goes with this other guy from Texas, Bugs Henderson. Anyone every listen to Bugs Henderson?

Ike was very important for Blue Note. In the late fifties Alfred Lion gave him a chance to record and also serve as A&R man for the label. Ike and Alfred became very close. Ike brought in quite a few players and acted as a sort of straw boss, handling a number of things for Alfred with the musicians, arranging for the paid rehearsals, etc. It was a blow to the label when Ike became very ill and died of lung cancer in the middle of the 'sixties. One of the artists Ike brought to the label, Duke Pearson, filled his shoes (and quite admirably) for Alfred Lion and then Francis Wolff.

Ike had that big old tenor sound. He had an incredible musical mind, and I think he had great people skills.

Disc 2, one of my favorite jazz sessions of the fifties.

The sound of the piano here demonstrates what is so special about the Sony SCD-XA5400ES, it lacks the metallic edge even the ZDAC-1 seems to give to the attack of Bill Evans' notes, and there is a deeper resonance to the resolving notes. (That looks weird but that's the best way I can describe it.) A fantastic player, especially for acoustic instruments recorded with room to "bloom."

The sound is excellent on this set, better than any lp or cd I've had from these albums.
