I pulled this one out of the shelves this morning. Hard not to love Wingy Manone's joyous playing. Some really good 78s on this one.

Just a quiet fire to this collaborative material, masters producing masterful collaborations. Miles appears on the first five selections and Lee on the first six. Teddy Charles seems the leader of the remaining session.

This is a good one that has rested unplayed too long.

Well, a disappointing Halloween. . . only ten trick or treaters, about a third of what has been normal in the past few years. And though cold it was the nicest weather in a long time, no rain or wind. Sigh.

Daylight savings is over, I usually look forward to that extra hour 'falling back' but this season sleep is more elusive and now I'm up listening to music, which is oaky if I can get an extra hour in!

Right now I finally get to sit down for a little listen and selected disc 2 of this new Jazz in Britain 3 cd set from Stan Tracey's Spectrum, "Tribute to Thelonious Monk"



So far I find these interpretations both Monkian and non-Monkian, a very hard to balance presentation. I like the two discs I've been through.

Now onto the newly released James Brandon Lewis (and Red Lily) "Calling Antonin"

I know enough Dvorak to hear some of the thematic connections here, and this is an involving listen. Great engineering!

I'm listening to the "Voices" half of the Getz cd. . . . I sort of dozed off when listening before, I had gotten up so early that I was chilled into a little nap and a nice eggplant dinner I cooked up helped me get too mellow. Which is good as I'll be watching results on TV for some hours tonight.

Lost my internet about 10 last night. . .finally got it back.

This morning I've been proud of my two states, Texas and Ohio, turning blue in important ways and with women Governors, a good thing. My wife is perhaps a bit too ecstatic.

I listened to this Bethlehem Don Elliott LP:



Elliott sounds a lot like Woody Herman to me, which for me is a nice thing.

On to another great box set, disc 12. It always amazes me that this set has such good sound quality, most BBC recordings I own are mono and not this excellent sounding. And a fascinating variety of material.

A late start to listening today. A rainy and cold morning. I just came back from a walk with Tobi which he cut short which is unusual--it will be interesting to see how he deals with the winter coming (our first with Tobi) though his dislike of rain may be different than his reaction to snow, we'll see.

I'm starting off with an anticipated set that arrived last night "New Orleans Joys" the first recordings of Jelly Roll Morton prior to the famous Victor sides from Thompson Square, a 2 cd box set with a fantastic 80 page booklet. Wow, do these sides sound GREAT here.

A cold morning. Tobi and I took a brief walk around the area with a flashlight. At least the rain that plagued most of yesterday stopped overnight.

I'm starting off with the first disc of yet another box set that arrived yesterday, the Dave Holland "Freedom Call." I slept on the Dave Holland releases for a long time. . . that was not wise. They were so good. This set has three discs of previously unreleased recordings--this one from his Sextet, the second from his Quintet, and the last from his Prism outfit.
