So I pulled out one of my favs from back in the day: Doug MacLoud's Come to Find. On CD This was an audiophile favorite, but also a great album of acoustic blues.

Another very cool fall morning. Still and the humidity gives a bit or force to the cool. Going to be a lovely day.

I finished listening to a killer disc that I started last night, Dizzy Gillespie "The Giant" on Jazz in Paris/Gitanes cd. This great sextet really GROOVES. NHOP and Klook and the conga player lay it down. NHOP is the MVP IMO.

Now on to a second listen to this excellent cd that was released yesterday.

An owl right outside the window in the hemlock tree woke me up and I had trouble sleeping again so I woke up and turned the stereo on.

I haven't heard this Jimmy Smith Blue note cd in quite some time and it is hitting the spot. Cecil Payne and Kenny Burrell are a great team to spin out the blues with Jimmy. Art Blakey is on drums for one half, Bobby Donaldson on the second half.

It's her only album, and that may have been a shame as she sings well and has a lovely voice.

The more I play this disc, the more I enjoy it. At first I didn't quite see why they chose this album by Keith Jarrett to "re-interpret" and why they re-interpreted it as they did. But these questions seem less important now. The playing and recording are very good and quite enjoyable.

The cd sounds great to me, no need for me to have another version--though I have two other versions!

Woke up later to a cool soggy morning. We saw two deer far in the back, I was able to keep Tobi from going after them. He is becoming very obedient.

Starting off with Out of/Into "Motion 1" a great collective of modern Blue Note players.

Brave Tobi and I went out in the rain to take care of his morning business, a nice hard rain! I dried him off and fed him and changed my clothes and now we're enjoying a re-listen to disc 1 of the Grateful Dead "Summer Magic 1985" box set. This music is different than the Dead I am used to. I'm enjoying exploring it more than I'm "enjoying it."

And now for something completely different.

Meshuggah "Koloss" a Swedish Heavy Metal band.

It was recommended to me by a so called friend. Well I guess you could call it music.
It sounds as if the Cookie Monster is being tortured by The Blue Man Group on a 6 week meth binge while amplified guitars are being played by a family of rabid racoons in a thunder storm.
It might be a bit aggressive for my tastes, but I will listen to the whole album to make sure that it doesn't get better.

I went on a brief walk in the soggy cool morning with Tobi, after spending a few hours separating cds from double cd cases into single cases in preparation for the next trip to Half Price Books to sell them. Felt like a busy morning already and it's just begun!

Listened at first to disc 2 of the Grateful Dead "Summer Magic 1985" box set. There's some stuff to like in this 1985 material. . . but Brent really spoils it for me. I can handle his keyboard playing for the most part. . . but his vocals just take me right out of the "Dead" mindset. Just don't think they fit with the band, and don't like them.

Now onto both discs of this great recent compilation of Blue Note sides, disc 1 drawn mostly from the Japanese Blue Note 85th Anniversary UHQCD program remastered by Kevin Gray. Great music, nice selections and sequencing. Had this for a while but this is my first listen.

Another morning of separating cds in double cd cases into single cases, at least until my breakfast with in-laws at that terribly medocre diner . . . .

It's cold and a little soggy again. But should be a beautiful day. I'm starting off with Chet Baker "Young Chet," Pacific Jazz cd, a very nice compilation.

And following that, "Duke Ellington Octet at the Rainbow Grill" a very good sounding session featuring "the pianist" quite prominently on Moon cd. I can't ever get enough Duke. And I always like to hear John Lamb on bass with Duke.

I am trying to put up with a few aching parts of my anatomy (this storage unit project is really something) by enjoying this album which was in storage for so many years, and which I probably never appreciated as much as I do listening to it today.

Tenor Saxophone, Flute, Bass Clarinet – Billy Mitchell
Trumpet – Joe Newman

I wonder if Billy Mitchell did all the reed and flute parts in over-dubbing? A fun listen.
