Nice and cool this morning and no rain overnight! I had a busy day yesterday and slept like a log. Had a nice walk in the dark with Tobi and a freshly-batteried flashlight.

Staring off "Outward Bound" with Eric Dolphy Quintet on the Prestige Remasters by Rudy Van Gelder cd.

Now on to something quite different, that sounds so much more impactful than the last time I listened to it, due to system improvements.

Barney Wilen & Dièse 440 "Live In Paris 8 Janvier 1983" Marge cd

Recorded on January 8, 1983, at the Théâtre du Forum des Halles in Paris and features Wilen on tenor saxophone collaborating with electronic musicians Michel Bertier, Guillaume Loizillon, and Claude Micheli.

Miles Davis  April 11, 1970
Fillmore West Auditorium, San Francisco CA

This is the "Friday Night" performance that exists in edited form on "Miles Davis at Fillmore" and then was part of the Bootleg Series, Volume 3 in less edited form. BUT I am listening to a bootleg version that I acquired about 15 years ago. Love this music!

Just what I needed right now, this rich and lush recording of Joe Lovano with the WDR Big Band and Rundfunk Orchestra.

All this and "Duke Ellington's Sound of Love" as well!

An almost cold morning. While in the back yard Tobi luckily did not notice four deer in the trees just beyond our cleared back yard and he obediently came inside for breakfast and I avoided another confrontation . . . .

Starting off with a Savoy/Denon cd, a sort of Dixie/Swing session that I have not heard in a long time.

Emmet Berry and Joe Wilder, Buster Bailey and Vic Dickenson, Bucky Pizzarelli et al as 7th Avenue Stompers, "Fidgety Feet"

Trummy Young "1944-1946" Chronogical Classics cd

I have long been a Trummy Young fan. This disc has fun sides that feature Roy Eldridge, Buster Bailey, Buck Clayton, Slam Stewart, Cozy Cole et al . . . including a session with Ike Quebec.

Art Farmer Quintet "The Time And The Place (The Lost Concert)" Mosaic cd

Bass – Walter Booker
Drums – Mickey Roker
Flugelhorn – Art Farmer
Piano – Albert Dailey
Tenor Saxophone – Jimmy Heath

From Mosaic:

"In 1967, Columbia issued The Time And The Place by the Art Farmer quintet, billing it as a concert from the Museum Of Modern Art. In fact, it was a studio recording with fake applause dubbed in. The real concert sat in the vaults until three tunes came out on a 1982 double LP reissue. Even then, no one seemed to discover the ruse. When Mosaic began researching Farmer's Columbia tapes, it became obvious that those three tracks were live and the original album was manipulated.
The actual concert took place on August 18, 1966 was recorded and, except for three tunes, has sat in the vaults ever since. Mosaic has uncovered the original three-track masters of the unedited performance, which contains seven superb extended performances and remixed them in 24-bit."

I've always found Bill Evans' Conversations With Myself more, shall we say abstract, than the music he plays with his trios. I guess mostly just because there are a lot more notes flying around. Not bad, but different from the more dreamy and modal stuff he is best known for.

HDTT DSD Download

I've only ever heard the HDTT transfer and it isn't great IMO. Kind of bright, but maybe that is what they were going for to be sure you can hear all the notes.

I don't remember my Verve cd version (in the Complete Verve Recordings box set) sounding particularly bright. I may remember to check it out soon. An interesting album; there are other solo piano recordings by Evans that are more typical "Evans."

On the way too and from my storage unit today I listened to disc 1 and 2 of Grateful Dead "Dave's Picks Volume 23."  Recorded at McArthur Court in Eugene, Oregon, on January 22, 1978. I was struck by some really fine guitar playing by Bob Weir.

Later in the day I listened to Ike Quebec "Heavy Soul" Blue Note Japan 24 Bit RVG lp facsimile cd.

A warmer morning, but there was still no rain yesterday, a good thing. Tobi has forgiven me for leaving him twice yesterday and we had a nice walk listening to the forest before dawn.

I'm listening as I move discs in that are housed in 2 cd cases into two separate jewel cases so that I can sell them to Half Price Books for their pittance. Tedious work but the system sounding so good makes it more pleasurable!

First Duke Ellington "Harlem" Pablo OJC cd.

And then on to disc 3 in this box set, "My Favorite Things"

Not a classical album!

Boyd Raeburn And His Orchestra "Boyd Meets Stravinski" Savoy/Denon cd

From AllMusic:

"This superb album is comprised of tracks recorded by the band at its creative peak in the mid-'40s. The arrangements and original compositions by pianist George Handy acknowledge developments in 20th-century classical music up to that time, melding poly-tonality, shifting meters, and irregular rhythms with bebop and contemporary big band techniques. The musicianship is absolutely top-notch. In terms of ensemble execution, the Raeburn band was nearly unsurpassed, and the solos -- while often talking a backseat to the compositions themselves -- are frequently excellent. Of particular note is the work of the Johnny Hodges-inspired alto saxophonist Bothwell. Handy's fanciful arrangements occasionally go off the deep end, but the extent of his creativity was considerable, and the balance of artistry and kitsch usually weighs in favor of the former."

I'm now listening to one of four different versions of this material that I have, the 1995 Japanese 2 cd release on Eastworld TOCJ-5939-40

It sounds a lot like the Jazz Classics US 2 cd set, perhaps a bit more bass.

Nice and cool this morning, and the rain from last evening has the ground moist and the air feels great against the skin. A great spell of cool weather ahead of us I believe.

Started off the morning listening to ne of my favorite Andrew Hill albums, "Black Fire" on teh Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Edition cd; Joe Henderson fit so well with Hill's compositions and playing on this one that one could have hoped for an alternate reality where Joe and Andrew had a long run together like Charlie Rouse and Thelonious Monk did.

Then I moved on to "Olé Coltrane" the fourth disc in the new Coltrane Mono 1960-1964 box set. A really good fit after "Black Fire," and sounding great.
