A beautiful quiet Saturday morning, dry and cool. Looking forward to a great dinner with one of my brothers and his wife tonight. We just don't get together often enough.

The cool dry morning started off with Tobi chasing a deer from the back yard, luckily he stopped and came back when I told him to. He's such a well-behaved dog, more so than any other I've ever had. Yesterday we went hiking in the woods in a park and off leash he led the way and had a heck of a time, especially just running in the fields in front of the gazebo on the way back to the car. It was a perfect weather day. Then in the evening Lucy and I had e wonderful meal with my brother Les and sister-in-law Janell.

This morning I went over to the shelf I have all my 24 bit by RVG Japanese Blue Note LP facsimile cds within and randomly pulled out Herbie Hancock "Speak LIke A Child," a beautiful gatefold reissue that is sounding very nice this morning.

We got some rain overnight, but not a "storm," so Tobi was not "upset." That dog has become the centerpiece of our home, we're so lucky we were able to take him when our neighbor went into assisted-living. A great dog, best either of us have ever had.

I'm re-listening to Slim Gaillard "1947-1951" as I put cds that I can't bear to take to Half Price Books into a binder.

Now on to
Dave's Picks "Vol. 53" releasing the Grateful Dead concert of October 2, 1976, at Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati. I'm listening to disc 3, which also has filler material recorded on May 4, 1977, at the Palladium in New York City.

And having Oscar Pettiford and Art Blakey as your rhythm section and Rudy Van Gelder as the engineer doesn't hurt at all. On CD.

I think that what is "unique" about this record is that it's his second on Riverside, which was a big deal as his Prestige recordings were sort of lost in the fog, and the first for Riverside was all Ellington material, in an effort to show that Monk wasn't some weirdo who could only play his decidedly different compositions. And this second one he is showcasing his "unique" style on popular standards.

I think the strategy worked--as Monk's sales perked up and his recognition as a leader broadened.

After this the world was apparently ready for the briliant front line of "Brilliant Corners"--Monk leading strong soloists covering his ownc compositions.

That's a great Joe Henderson album.

A soggy morning. We dodged a really severe thunderstorm last night--did not get the high winds predicted, but it sure is soggy out there. And warm.

Starting the day off with one of the very first LPs I ever owned, gifted to me by one of the Peace Corps volunteers my father directed in Swaziland, my brother thinks it was Chris Matthews (who was one of the volunteers) but I'm not sure that's accurate.

A dry cool morning. We are entering my favorite weather period, fall. I could do without the high winds that seem to be a new feature to the season--there's a giant beech tree that has become hollow we will have to cut down--big dollars to do that will have to come from somewhere. . . .

Starting off wtih "Strings" by Pat Martino on Prestige/OJC cd. This album is fierce--partly it's the way it was recorded and partly it is the intensity that Pat and Joe Farrell bring to their heads and solos.

Retired early bone tired, and up early to a sweetly cool morning. A neighbor had a large party last night and the quiet is welcome this morning, as every morning.

I couldn't resist, as an obsessive Coltrane listener, pre-ordering the new Mono Atlantic box set, which arrived yesterday. Interestingly this cd box set (mirroring the LP version) uses French original covers, which are nice to have. I'm listening to "Giant Steps" and it definitely sounds great.
