This is probably the latest I’ve listened to music in a very long time. Just testing out my new desktop set up with the Ampapa D1 and my Pinnacle PN5+ speakers. Since it’s so late, I really can’t flex it’s muscles. Right now I’m just enjoying the music in the office streaming music through Qobuz. Tomorrow will be a fun day!!

Couldn't bear to watch the second half of the Cavs game and went to bed early. . . and woke up a bit earlier than usual. Nice quiet cool morning. It's Miles Davis' 200th birthday, and just read the sad news that Sonny Rollins has died. So I'm starting off with a disc that has a bit of Rollins with Miles at the end. . . .

I played other Rollins (disc 4 and then 7 of his complete Prestige recordings) but not Tenor Madness. . . at least not yet. Need to shift to Miles as well.

I am not sure that Sonny would have been the last one of that generation of greats still alive, there is likely a few still kicking, but he was supposedly the last person alive in this very famous photograph, "A Great Day in Harlem":

I checked and the other cd that has this Blakey session in my holdings (“Hardbop” Savoy Jazz cd) has the mono version of the session (plus a stereo alternate and a Hardman led session) and sounds much better for it.

Now on to disc two of "Miles Davis '54" --which has a bit more of Miles and Sonny together, and also the session with Monk and Milt.

Sure sounds good.

I have most of this material on other LPs and cds but I love this music so much. . . I picked this and several other Neatwork Duke cds cheap and really enjoy their sound.

i think this period of Duke's work is not as "famous" as it should be.

Haven’t listened to Benny in a while… and I have always enjoyed this album. Right now I’m going through a phase of evaluating my new desktop Ampapa D1 amp in my office, so I’m trying to listen to music that I am familiar with before I start rolling the Sparkos op amp. Going to give this amp sufficient burn in time, so right now I’m just sitting back and enjoying the music.

I'm starting off a warm morning with an album that has haunted my listening world since about '74. After I digested "Miles at Fillmore" and "Live/Evil" I tackled this and let it wash over me for many plays. I could get no one around me to sit still and listen to this--they were all wrapped up in Pink Floyd and would hardly listen to any jazz let alone a funky assault on the senses that this one is. (To this day I can't spin Floyd--I heard it so much during this time and I lost any interest).

I have my OG LP but this SACD version has a certain balance that I love to listen to, it became my go to version.

After listening to "On the Corner" I went off on a thought tangent of how important bass players were to the Miles Davis ensembles, and how he had innovative and important players anchoring his music for long stretches. Paul Chambers. . . just an amazing player in all facets of bass playing. Then Ron Carter, who was so flexible and propulsive, and then Michael Henderson who has always captivated and intrigued me, a rock and also a hard place in the best way within the music. These three are present in so much of the music that really drew me deeply into jazz.

Summer 1971 recordings. It's Friday. This will help me get going. . . We have my weekly breakfast with one of Lucy's sister and her husband. I love visiting with them but they insist on this very mediocre cafe that we have been going to for several years and really don't want to eat at!
