That was quite a movie, a sensation at the time.

We got a little bit of snow overriight, enough that the bare trees will be wearing white coats and the beauty will be back with the dawn.

I decided to start off with the second disc of this 2 cd set, which I have not yet played though I have spun the first disc three times!

At times here his tenor reminds me of Lateef's and Kirk's.

I got a copy that (I hope is skip through unlike the one I have on hand) I received today at the same time that a new trio of 845 tubes arrived and I'm testing both out.

No skipping so that's a good thing (I found I had two copies a year or so ago and gave one away, seems I gave a skip-free one away as the one I pulled out a week ago does have a skip). I really love this disc. It has Monday's magic on it and also a samba-esque feel to much of the material. A great recording as well.

It's showing the new tube I installed in my Dynagrid Jr. outboard rectifier is giving me just what I hoped for.

Bill Evans "Inner Spirit: he 1979 Concert At The Teatro General San Martin" Resonance Records 2 cd set, disc 1

This was on sale for 7.99 at Resonance Records online so I bought a copy (and two other titles) as a birthday present for my best friend and sent it to him in Austin today. It's one of my favorite of the Evans releases this century so I decided to pull it out and put one of the discs on. (Sounds really good, and really good with the new 845).

I had forgotten this was the first RCA release by Desmond, putting him in a much different setting than a quartet setting, probably a smart move but time has proven this to be less discussed than those that followed on RCA.

I like this though, and yet. . . even with Jim Hall. . . I miss the blend of Desmond and Brubeck, it's like sweet and sour, or just the right blend of spices in a curry.

Miles Davis Quintet "Paris Jazz Festval - Salle Pleyel - 10/1/1964" 2 SACD set from Sony in the 7" packaging series. Disc 1

This is one concert from the recent Sony box set of French concerts, and I enjoy these shows. The SACD may not sound that much different than the cd release, but the subtle difference is audible mainly in dynamic contrast.

One of Shorter's first shows with the Quintet and there's a sense that the rhythm section is really enjoying supporting hin and prodding him a bit.

A fascinating disc with a rich tapestry of sound created by a great crew:

Acoustic Bass – Dezron Douglas
Alto Saxophone – Immanuel Wilkins
Drums, Cymbal – Johnathan Blake
Piano, Keyboards – David Virelles
Vibraphone – Joel Ross

This was one of the first albums where I realized that Wilkins and Ross were young masters to be followed.

Cedar Walton/Hank Mobley Quintet "Breakthrough" Savoy Jazz cd

Somewhere, possibly in storage, I have the 32 Jazz cd, but found this Savoy Jazz first (I am sure they are identical in sound).

Not the best Mobley and the final one, the recording is not stellar (a Malcolm Addey one which I usually find better than this) but I'm enjoying it after not hearing it for many years.

There was a lot going on in 1968: Tet, the RFK and MLK assassinations, the DNC, Nixon... I was 7 and I remember. One of the things I missed was Buddy Guy live in Berkeley, which fortunately was recorded. Really well.

24/192 FLAC download from Craft recordings.

Others have bought vinyl from Craft, but the files cost less and give me instant gratification. And it sounds great.

I tried to listen to the first disc of the latest Art Pepper box set, "Everything Happens To Me: 1959 – Live At The Cellar," but I just was not feeling Art's intensity this morning, so I moved on to:

Miles Davis Quintet "Live in Europe 1967--Bootleg Series Vol. 1" Sony Blu-Spec CD edition, disc 2

This disc contains 2 November 1967 at the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, Denmark plus the beginning of 6 November 1967 at the Salle Pleyel in Paris, France.

Sound is not perfect but decent. Interesting performances. I prefer earlier recordings of this quintet but they were a formidable and influential group in modern jazz.
