Full moon, bright and vivid. We went to bed early, I woke up and couldn't go back to sleep, a lot on my mind, and some clogged sinuses. Firing up the system to get some early morning sound.

Re-visiting disc six of Bob Dylan "The Bootleg Series Vol. 18: Through The Open Window, 1956-1963" . . . . What a young force, real talent bursting out of him.

Wow. A great experience with the stereo in it's current form. Love this music!

Enjoying this new 2 cd release from Resonance of Rahsaan Roland Kirk recorded live at the Penthouse in Seattle, Washington on September 8 & 15, 1967, recorded from radio broadcasts with pianist Rahn Burton, bassist Steve Novosel and drummer Jimmy Hopps.

My family rarely played any secular Xmas music when we were growing up, as a minister and a classical music lover he just didn't want to hear that stuff. THIS was his Christmas go to . . . and I decided to listen to disc 1 of my cd copy this morning.

I'm sure your dad (and likely you) knew that the first half of the Messiah was about Christmas while the second half was about Easter

. I spent plenty of my younger hours in church myself, and while the religion part didn't stick I did enjoy the Christmas music. But it was only later in life I came to know and love perhaps the greatest intersection of Christmas and classical music: Bach's Christmas Oratorio.

On CD

This is fantastic music, like most Bach, but much more celebratory than the Passions, which were written for a, shall we say, more somber occasion. Eugen Jochum's recording is spectacular in every way.

And on that one album there is only one song to listen to! "Blue Christmas" by Elvis Presley is the only Christmas song I will listen to. Heck I don't even care for Elvis, but I do like "Blue Christmas".

Starting off a snowy morning with a cd that I used to play to death but have neglected for a few years.

It's the amazing 1960 band of Charles Mingus with Bud Powell sitting in for one piece. Hard to top the ensemble and the compositions really allow for the incredible stretched out performances.

An unusual one that showcases two different editions of Yes. Sure sounds great on my present system, so different than I remember it sounding when I had the Torii Mk III in the system.

Reply #27986 - Yesterday at 18:45:28 James, yes, "Messiah" was played Easter as well, but it was most notably a Christmas even in our house. My Dad was not a big Bach fan. He liked the cello suites a lot, but he was more a fan of PDQ Bach (who was a graduate of Swarthmore College as he was, a few years behind, they met).
