A thunderstorm woke us up and I for one had a hard time going back to sleep so I got up to do some listening.

This solo piano disc (like the other three in the series on Adventure Music) is fascinating and in great sound and perfect for this time of the day/night. Great selections as well--a few originals and well chosen pieces.

This is such an amazing, powerful album. The new remix is good, but I find that I prefer the original mix--maybe because I have had it so long, but maybe because the swampy density of the sound just seems appropriate for the material. I'll never tire of this work--the songs, the sequencing, the mood.

There are perhaps better sounding digital editions, but I still like this one, it's "earthy" sounding to me.

I've been listening to a lot of classical piano lately (not that there is anything wrong with that) and needed a change of pace, so I went with Monk.

On CD

There are a lot of great Monk albums, but I have a special affinity for Straight, No Chaser. It was the first Monk album I heard back in high school, and for several years the only one I knew. And unlike most of the Columbia/CBS/Sony classical recordings of the era, Teo Macero's production sounds great.

One of my first Monks as well, and a favorite.

Teo Macero was an excellent producer, in part because he was a composer and tenor saxophonist himself and had that magnificent Columbia recording space of the time, and was able to work with some of the best engineers there were at the time for the genre. He seemed to have a way of handling Monk that was unique among the producers--partly by ignoring him, partly by annoying him, partly by surreptitiously recording him. What a great album!

I looked him up (to be sure I spelled his name right) and was surprised to learn in addition to everything else he graduated from Juilliard. So he certainly had some chops.

Another Teo Macero, and possibly my favorite Miles Davis album. A triple threat: great music, great playing and great production.
