A couple weeks ago Lon mentioned his favorite Paul Desmond album was probably in the 7 CD set of recordings from a 1975 gig in Toronto, which I didn't even know existed. So I bought it (my first purchase on Discogs) and it is indeed great. Thanks Lon!

On CD

If I had to pick think I still like Desmond with Jim Hall a little better. But I'm glad I don't have to choose.

What Lon said. The 1975 Toronto/Mosaic set doesn't have Jim Hall, although it does have a cameo from Rob McConnell which is a nice bonus. If you're a Paul Desmond fan and don't have it, run don't walk to get it.

I have a very strange Sly Stone story.

For a short while Sly lived in my home town of Oreana Il, population 1000, in the middle of corn fields.

This was in the early '80's, '83 or so.
We was living with, what turned out to be, coke dealers.

Anyway, to the story.

My cousin, right out of college, was a rookie reporter for the local tv station and was sent out to interview Sly.

From what I gather, Sly was on about a three day bender when my cousin showed up to interview him. I guess that he was unintelligible and very paranoid.
The real kicker is that he kept saying that all he wanted to do was to have sex with my cousin.
I'm assuming that she kept it professional, but you never know....

I have had it in the Chaloff Mosaic set for decades (I have both lp and cd versions of that box set). Chaloff should have been around longer. . . a sad story that can be said of too many great musicians.

I get it. I didn't have ONE location forming me. . . Philadelphia until I was 11, and that I think did shape my interest in African American music over all other perhaps. Then five years in Africa. That was an experience of varied nature for music and all forms of life. Then a few years in Ohio, then Chicago, more in Ohio, and then over three decades in Austin, Texas where I learned to perform music. Somehow it makes sense to ME that jazz took center stage as a melting pot of many influences.

Spinning this INCREDIBLE SACD just before bed. It's only really fault is it's so short. The mastering of familiar music is so good that it makes me think all the time of the original engineering, how amazing that is. Paul Chambers sound so so good here, his touch and the resonance of his bass in the room so well captured, and the sound board of Evans' piano is exquisitely portrayed.

Starting off with an interesting cd that I haven't heard in a while, Brazilian drummer (and Joyce's husband) Tutty Moreno, "Forcas D'Alma" Sons de Bahia cd

Alto Saxophone, Soprano Saxophone, Clarinet – Nailor Proveta
Bass – Rodolfo Stroeter
Drum – Tutty Moreno
Piano – André Mehmari
Vocals, Guitar – Joyce
Orchestral accompaniment on several tracks.

A nice jazz outing, hitting the right spot this morning.

Starting off a nice cool morning with some old time music from various bands Jack Purvis led or played lead trumpet within. Purvis was a great trumpeter influenced by Pops, and I confess that over the years I've come to enjoy the 'twenties/early 'thirties dance and pop music as odd sounding as it is today.

Maybe the band wasn't "lubricated" enough.
