Everyone brought their A game to this Willie fest and Lukas Nelson and Dave Matthews really impressed me--and I confess neither ever impressed me before. A well done, fun concert.

This is one of those rare recordings where the engineering is an essential part of the story-telling, and Kevin Gray's mastering lets that story ring out.

Where RVG placed Jones' drums as an anchor, how delicately he recorded Wilbur Little's bass and Candido's drums, where and with such careful attention to volume and intensity he placed the horns and flutes. . . there is mastery here that is a perfect vehicle for the music. This is one of the 85th Anniversary UHQCDs that has really impressed me by bringing out the heart of the music.

Listening to Grant Green on this hot Wednesday morning - perhaps inspired in part by the other Grant Green album posted above, and Hank Mobley's album "Workout" that includes Grant Green. First up is "Sunday Mornin'" recorded in 1961, which I don't see mentioned much:

I like it a lot, including the melodic development of ideas which seem pretty understandable to me. I thought the rendition of "So What" (a song from Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" album) seemed particularly interesting, and was a highlight for me.

Followed it up with Grant Green "Talkin' About" from 1964, a trio with Larry Young on organ:

This has been one of my least favorite Grant Green albums, but I wanted to revisit it to see if I feel differently about it now. I just don't "get" some of the material (though given how much Grant Green music I like, I think it is clear that the issue is more my understanding rather than the quality of the music).

Sam Rivers "Fuschia Swing Song" Blue Note Japan 85th Anniversary UHQCD

A fascinating album; Jaki with Ron and Tony are something else.

I met Sam about 40 years after this was recorded. Still one of the most amazing performers I've seen and one of the nicest persons I've met.

Bennie Green "Mosaic Select" discs II and III

Babs and Bennie!

Babs was a tremendous talent imo. I once asked producer Michael Cuscuna to compile all his recordings in a Mosaic set. His very appropriate response was "Lon, you must be out of your mind!"

I bought this when it first came out, and I was then a recent Grateful Dead explorer. I loved the cover. . . the record not so much. A lovely gal (in all ways) I then knew liked it a lot so I gave it to her and never replaced it.

I like it a lot more now in this new release, in part because it sounds so good and my system is so different (in important, improved ways) than it was at that time, fifty years ago.

Very challenging 5 cd set that is really not at all my cup of tea but it was a gift that I will work my way through.

Really well recorded. I’m on the second disc.

Edit to add: I may not go any further with this set and put it up for sale. Repetitive short phrasing for an hour or so seems to be the modus operandi. Not very enjoyable, though very well-recorded.

Listening to a couple of saxophone players, who both started playing before "pre-bebop," but the recordings I have been listening to are from after Bebop started (and indeed, I think after its heyday). First is "Lester Young with the Oscar Peterson Trio" recorded in 1954:

Having listened to some of his older recordings, this is the one that has "grabbed me" the most - perhaps because it is the most modern!

Followed up with "Coleman Hawkins Encounters Ben Webster" (and they both encounter Oscar Peterson and his band on this CD) as recorded in 1957:

While both pre-date Bebop, Wikipedia notes that he recorded music that has some "bop" elements and on very early bebop recordings. Also seems like Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins were proponents of specific pre-bob styles, and other sax players tended to fall within their respective "camps."
