Well, thanks. I hadn't thought about it that way but yes, I've learned to like an awful lot of music over the years. My parents got me grounded in classical and swing. My stay in Africa opened my ears up to a whole different type of sound and the fact that music can communicate, can be a social vehicle. Beginning to play music out of the house (on drums) exposed me to mechanics of how music is made, which helped me to appreciate music that I hadn't before, from the inside so to speak.
I've found some things have really held up over the years: I don't really like pop music and a lot of white rock bands, or that is I can like them but they don't hold up over time to lots of listening. And I'm not really a "singer-songwriter" guy. . . especially white guys with acoustic guitars. Bore the pants off me. That's just me, maybe part of my upbringing, also part of my experience making music. Finally I have had far too much experience with rednecks and am not fond of them or music that reminds me of them. I like music that may be complexly crafted such as classical, jazz, or Brazilian bossa nova, and I love music with real edge and balls, like Hendrix and 'lectric Miles and Albert Ayler and Opeth.
I wish I could stop buying music. But I can't. I have enough to last several lifetimes. . . but. . . . Need to push myself into the disappointing and frustrating process of finding work. I need money for more music!
