12" Rockford woofers in WO
03/08/07 at 07:42:27

Iīm about to build a 12" WO using two 12" Rockford Fosgate RFR3112.
Powered by a Digital Designs Z1.
Iīm only going to raise it up from 12" to 14" on the design.
Iīve read somewhere that Steve had recommended to do so.
I will build the 36" x 36" version..and the height 14". Anyone who think this would work? Huh
Or not??
Give me some positive answers..  :) Perhaps this subject has been discussed over and over but the use of the RF woofers are quite rare i would think.

From what I have seen they should put out some very loud, low bass in the WO. The only major worry I would have is depth for mounting. When you slant the board to accommodate the cone, make sure the magnet will clear before you get too deep into construction.

Take care,
Robert

STUPID  F***ING MAGNET!!  :'(
Itīs to big.. no matter how I turn it around it needs about 0.25" of extra space.
In simple words, the magnet crashes into the frickinīwall.
What to do? I NEED it to work!

You've already got the box built? If not, build it bigger. If so....maybe add another layer to the front of the baffle?

EDIT: That may not work, depending on your build.

Another thought, once again depending how you built it, would be to make larger sides and mount them on the outside, in place of the existing. Tell me if the drawing below makes sense:

Or just cutout the space for the magnet, since you only need .25", then put a plate over it on the exterior.

Now, I'm one more for function than form, so consider that when reading my ideas. I don't care what my boxes look like, as long as they perform as intended.

Iīll try some modifications tomorrow.. Itīs 8:25 PM here right now Smiley

i agree with you, find out where the magnet will touch, cut a hole big enuf to allow for the magnet and then useing mdf rings and mdf  circles, seal the hole from the outside. building it the way you stated (14 tall and 36x36) is the best way i believe.

but i might try the scale every number by 1.2 one day?

let us know how it works out please.

edit; if its only .25" off, you can sand that out with a grinder pretty easy, no need for any mods to the box. if you use 3/4 mdf -.25" your wall will still be 1/2" thick a lil fiber glass or epoxy and im positive it will be problem free for life.

Guess what? THEY FIT!! Ok ok.. some modifications were maid.
I now call this WO "Battle of the bulge"  :D
Will put up som pics of it when I have my camera with me.
Looks kinda wierd, but who cares.. as long as it rocks.

I actually built the WO with 12" subs before.. That time I scaled it up by 1.2
And it... SUCKED! Scaling is imho a big no no. Thatīs why iīm buliding
after the original this time. Only raising it up 2".

Will keep everyone updated..

Oh yeah.. no slanting of the baffle either.. Smiley

Didnīt matter in my case.. The magnets are 300oz.
In the original plans of the WO the space on the baffle
is to small for a 12" without slanting the baffle.
And I also use double baffle. Took me 2 hours trying
to fit them without modification. There was no way in hell
to fit them without changing the apperance of the box.
The RF woofer has a mounting depth of 7" and the magnet
is 8.34" wide and about 4.3" thick.
Now there is about 0.59" between the magnet and the outer wall.
Well iīm going to take some pics of it during the build.

very interesting, can you tell us more about the subs and amps you used and what about the sound  was it (punchy peaky, gutless weak no lows no highs ?? etc etc) that sucked? im very supprised such a small deviation from the origional was so dissapointing, and i am seriously thinking about building it scaled by 1.2 so any thing you can offer about your experience i would appreciate.

I ran into the same problem with 12" in a WO.
What I did was to route a hole in the side of the WO to accomidate the driver and I added a larger than needed patch to the outside of the cabinet.
If I was going to build another I'd use plywood instead of MDF to reduce weight.
I've built tree WO's and this onr hits hard and low.I was comparing it to my imperial ( set up as sub)and it hits as hard in the lower area's but was a little muddier in quality. All in all a great sub for it's size.

Yeah, well perhaps i could have routed a hole i the cabinet but
I did it the hard way by drawing a kind of lump on the outside
next to the baffel. Now the subs can be mounted straight.
Well the bulid has been kind of slow since I installed
the amp in my car with my old box. A bandpass box..
Holy moly it hits sooo hard you wont believe. BUT!
the bulid must go on.. (sounds almost like a queen song?) Cheesy
Well well I will update again when progress has been made.

just curious, what are the mounting depth of the some 12's that have fit in the WO?  Do most just increase the height of the box to accomodate, or scale the whole box up?  I've got a customer that would be a perfect for a 12" WO--he's got Memphis M3 12's with a mounting depth of 6.1 inches-wondering if they are worth the build time/wood Smiley Smiley

Well, the Rockford in question from this thread has a mounting depth of just over 7" and needed mods to fit. I think 6" will go pretty close and anything under that should work without any mods. Seems like the ones that I remember from the past had close to 6" mounting depths.

Let us know how your customer likes it!

Take care,
Robert

sold them. I've got a herd of SPL subs right now
6 DD 95's and 2 Treo CSX 15's.  I'm trying to move my SPL gear out of my Xterra and get back to a good daily system in it.

the question about the WOOD is MDF.  Topped with double-wide closed cell foam.  good stuf.
