Why the cutout in panel (B) ?

I understand that panel (B) is attached to panel (A) to make the removeable lid, but I am not sure why we are cutting the round hole in it.  If we need the additional stiffness, then why cut a hole in it.  More room for the speaker magnet?
No big deal, but I am curious.

Bob Z said the cutout is for reduction of standing waves.
another reason would be that panel b would be smaller in volume.

OK, sounds reasonable.  After all whats one more hole after I have the router all set up and making clouds of beautiful MDF dust!
Anyone else thought we could make womens face powder out of all the MDF dust from these projects:)
