I have made a YouTube video recently about this actual reel to reel tape.  If anyone really wanted to hear the difference between the tape and a digital recording, this is a golden opportunity.

I have the actual 4K video available here for download:  https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fA6kd7mWwnlVSJX9fXV3zMFCdYd1HnOe/view?usp=share...  Do not watch it on Google, as they also compress it.  Just download it.

so there is no YouTube compression, but even on YouTube the difference is obvious.  Listen to the live digital YouTube video, with your eyes closed.  It's around 8 minutes into the video and then compare it with the clip on my video that was recorded in my room from the electrostats using this tape.  Assuming you use headphones for the test, and have similar sensibilities to myself, you will see why I have listened to this tape 11 times so far.

Steve,
That's an amazing accomplishment to make an electrostatic speaker! What did you use for the membrane? It's interesting to hear the sound progressively snap in as you walk towards the sweet spot.
I use Quad ESL63 with Tony's amplifiers and the sound is very very close to the speed of the live violin. It's midrange sound is so spot on.

How does this recording compare to some of my other tapes? My sense is it's different & I'm interested to hear your thoughts on it's sound...

Hi Ed,

A couple things that stand out about the tapes sound (other than the incredible musicianship) is that smoothness/lack of dryness seems even better than before, perhaps more weight.  And having two pianos, one behind the other, gives more depth to the sound stage.  It's really enjoyable to listen to : )

Hi Steve,
I agree, the smoothness of the sound struck me compared to the earlier recordings. I had to change the setup position of the musicians, since we had 4 people on stage, to the microphones & I think the smoothness comes from a mixture of slightly less direct sound & more reflected sound. In fact if you see in the beginning of the video (0:03-0:13) where you can see the mic positions, you can see the cellist is actually pointing almost 120 degrees away from the microphones. Surprisingly, the cello sounds very strong & is very well defined.

I've always liked the natural reverb of this room to soften the direct sound. This is the perfect example of this.

Of course, it's the musicianship of these 4 artist's that makes this tape very special.
