W15 and F15 in same baffle
03/25/24 at 23:09:26

I really enjoy the sound of the Deware inspired baffles I made for the F15s. I currently have a single W15 in its own baffle.
My question: is there a reason to not put both W15 and F15 together into a single baffle?
I would like to have a pair of both but want to consolidate for space.
I would also like to power them both off of the ZMA instead of a separate amp for the W15s if anyone has suggestions for where to get a good crossover.
Thanks…

I’ve done both and I think that I prefer separate. Either way it is a great combination but when separate them into separate baffles you reduce the bass vibration and resonance on the mid and upper frequencies of the F15. They sound slightly less murky in separate baffles.
Additionally, you can set the F15s to the sweet spot of your listening position and then move the low bass to align with the lower ranges of the F15 and find the sweet spot for the room’s low frequency response.
Finally, you have more ability to set the vertical position of the F15 at the optimal height, which I find to be a little too tall when placed above the W15 if you give enough baffle space to both drivers.
I definitely understand your desire to streamline and downsize. I find the F15s to be wonderful drivers on their own, and only gain a little extra oomph below 85 hz by adding the W15. Realistically the low response of both drivers is pretty similar so you don’t really gain much by reducing the low frequencies directed to the F15 and redirecting them to the W15 by using a crossover. You really are just bolstering the low frequency response of the F15 with the additional poor (lol) low bass response of the W15 by adding a second amp and driving the W15 with sub frequencies. That’s why I think these two drivers have so much synergy as opposed to other subs with the F15. YMMV.

Exactly what I needed. Thank you. That saves me the effort and I can focus in a different direction.

I've spent a good portion of my winter on a project that will combine my F15s and W15s into one baffle design.

I'm disappointed to hear that this could create some murk in the sound.
This murky stuff is exactly what I was trying to avoid, by bringing the two drivers closer together.

I run my low frequency drivers  from the Zen speaker outs to a small resistor circuit, into an electronic crossover and a seperate amplifier. Crossed at around 40Hz with the H-Frame enclosure, I had a smooth transition.
I don't want to lose that!

Almost ready to go, but I will report back when complete.

So, I decided to try them both in one baffle and so far I really like the outcome. The sound stage moved up to eye level and seems to be perfectly centered. I used 1.5” butcher block. My bases are fairly thick at 3”. I used a Dayton Audio subwoofer amp instead of a plate amp. One for each woofer (W15).
My next step is room treatments so that may have something to say about what it really sounds like. The journey….
Here are some pictures. No, staining wood is not my forte as you can see.

Very cool. Thanks for sharing your build, and I don’t see anything wrong with your staining. From the photos you have posted you definitely have your own style, and that’s cool.

I have used a bunch of different Dayton products over the years but not those amps. Any idea what frequency you are crossing over at? I’ve been at 90hz for a while now on mine.

I’ve been at 100hz. I actually like having an adjustable crossover because different styles of music, such as rock, sound better around 150hz.
