In honor of the Dodgers advancing in the playoffs I give you the only composer I can think of who pulled a Koufax: Gioachino Rossini. In his mid-thirties he was both wildly successful and fabulously rich and he walked away from composing for reasons of which no one is quite sure (that last part is different from Sandy). The Austro-Germanic Musical Criticism Complex, AGMCC
tm, would have you believe all he did was write "light" music, like that is a problem. And while no one will confuse Rossini with Brahms, he did write some the most evocative, and instantly recognizable music composed by anyone. Which explains, and is explained by, its popularity in e.g. cartoon soundtracks.

On CD form the OCO box
It is no surprise that the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra plays this collection of Rossini Overtures with equal amounts of Austro-Germanic precision and
Italianate charm. The only possible downside is William Tell is not included.
