Another speaker project

Apparently I did not know that our current tower speakers are too big but I have been so informed. Cool, I needed a fun project and Padauk it is.

Those speakers look familiar. What are they?

They’re GR X-LS flat packs. The current plan is to migrate the components from the existing 39” tall X-SLS to these 13.5” cabs. Same electronics and speakers for both and my speakers are broken in. I’m daydreaming up a stand that'll raise/lower with minimal effort so I don’t kill the listening experience totally. Anyway, it’s too hot to get farther along than this.

A Burns moment: “The best laid schemes o' mice an' men / Gang aft a-gley.”

I ironed a wrinkle into the radius, and no amount of fettling would remove it. So, apply heat, remove beautiful veneer, and, hand plane the glue off the sides and the front. Sand, clean, reapply glue and new veneer.

Extra icing or more mayo or a pickle garnish is not available to woodworkers.

I've only done veneer a few times and I swore off after the first time. I kept trying. It is much more involved than it looks.

Are you using plain wood and wood glue, pre-glued veneer or contact cement? Curious.

Only results matter!
You're doing a great job.

It was such a relief to me when I handed my unused supply of veneer to a former friend. Ok, no we are still friends, but your riding the edge when you offer up such a gift.
I visited Kurt yesterday, and he was quick to show me the antique sewing machine that his mother used. Back in those days, it was veneered in oak. Now it appears to be a change in thought, and it is a BLACK PAINTED TOP. Milk paint of course, veneer is in pieces from the first and final try. God bless you Kurt. I would have done the same.

DD: I’m using Heat Lock glue and an iron. The glue dries hard before you bond it which allows easy alignment and as long as I don’t rush the process it’s not too difficult. Also easy to make an unrecoverable error, so there’s that.

Very cool!

The enclosures look great! Kind of nice having the works to slip right in after the wood is finished.

All of the routing is done, it’s up to the razors and files now to clean everything up. I'm applying water to all of the bearing edges where you can see the tool left a mark to swell those fibers before sanding.

I think I’m done trimming the edges and the tweeter inlet rings just need another touch up but they’re closing in on the finish.

A nice blister appeared after sitting in an overheated shop and it’s slowed progress

I had an idea…

I need to touch up that spot but it seems to have worked.

I need a better stand idea.
This accomplishes a complete system turnaround; understanding my hearing loss helped me change to a system that can help compensate for the massive frequency loss and make listening enjoyable again.

Edward,

Very nice job!  They look professionally done.

I am also trying to come up with an original idea for a interesting stand.
My mind hasn't been very fertile with any ideas yet.

How are those Tube Connectors?  I have always wondered how they compare to regular binding posts?

Anyway, great job!

Thank you.

The tube connectors make for a nice clean entrance but I don’t use the male end because it feels like banana plugs fit tighter (and any sonic improvement is likely negated) and for me, tight is better.

Replicating/modifying this Stickley fern stand is my purloined idea for stands, along with a set of Fat Dots that are in use now.

It is always good to see this level of woodworking. Not many people are really capable of it these days.
