DIY Open Baffle Tool recommendations

Greetings DIY experts! I am considering building my own DIY Open Baffles. By me asking this implies that I am a 'Beginner' so please be kind.....

. As a minimum, I think I understand I would need a router and a circle jig to cut the hole. Any advice from the respectable DIYers would be greatly appreciated. I have done some research on how to cut large diameter holes but I have not found DIY videos on how to build O/Bs. I have a looked at several circle jigs so brand and type recommendations would be appreciated! Thank you!

I use this hole jig.

It is a little clunky but does the job.

I use this router, a little overkill for most usage, but is very nice.

I built my first open babbles with a jig saw and a hand drill. Yes I drilled hundreds of 3/16' holes side by side to cut out my driver holes.
My motivation was much higher back then.

I have the same router as Donnie. I also have the Bosch trim router that is smaller and easier to handle. Both have circle cutting attachments sold separately. You can also diy a circle cutting jig for it fairly easily. Two rods, a chunk of scrap wood and a few screws. There are multiple YouTube videos on how to make one. The basic idea is drill a hole for the router bit at he inside edge of the hole. Mount the jig at the center point of the hole. Firmly grasp router and rotate it on center pin to cut the hole.

Jig saw works too. Slow and steady. Sneak up on your line. Expect to have some sanding to get things nice and round.

But wait…you can also use a hole saw for a drill or a forstner bit to drill out the edge of the circle. This will make a rough hole that requires even more sanding.

Hi Bob,

I am in the same boat - a total novice.
I got a plunge router from Harbor Freight for like $75
Haven't tried it yet, but for me it only has to work a few times :P
