Choosing an amp
04/27/22 at 23:33:06

Hi there, I am trying to decide wich amp to buy. My speakers are Monitor Audio 500 7G rated 90.5 db 4-8 Ohms. I was wondering if SE84UFO could work with them or if SE34I.6 could be a better match? Otherwise, reading some comments in the forum I noticed that the sound characteristics between the two amps are quite different, so it may be better to get two SE84UFOs an use them as monoblocks. However, it seems the SE34I.6 is more versatile.

Thanks in advance for helping me.

Welcome Eduardo!

Here is the Decware guide for choosing amps:

https://www.decware.com/newsite/buyingguide.html

Depending on how big your room is and how loud you like your music my guess is 2 UFOs or a SE34I.6 are probably the minimum, but you might be happier with 20+ watts.

First of all thanks for your answer I will check the link.
Currently I have a Mcintosh  MA 252 hybrid, however I would  like to expirience a full tube amp. I normaly listen 50% of the volume which may be 50 W solid state. It gives me around 75+db  to my listening position. I was wondering how it translates to low powered Decward amps.

Volume control position does not indicate power being used.
Unless you have some speakers that are around 65dB you are not using anything close to 50 watts.

One additional question: the SE34I.6 can have subwoofer outlets that could be used to biamp the speakers.  If I use that feature could I send more power to my speakers? Would it be a way to improve their performance?
