Curved wings on sides of baffles
03/14/21 at 18:38:43

Ive followed Mr. Leons posts on the Lii Audio Facebook page for quite sometime. Ive always been intrigued by the side wings that he puts on each rear side beside the woofers. These are aimed at controlling the rear bass waves. Im thinking about experimenting with curved wings that would follow the outside curve of the baffle, and would be 3/4 x 5 1/2. Lowes has material for this made out of polyurethane. What do you open baffle folks think about this? Would I be wasting my time?

Geno,

I know enough to know that I don't know. I can pass on this video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0dYJc9SeZ4&t=717s

I enjoyed watching Danny Richie's videos about speaker design. This one he talks about wings about 10 minutes in. I say it's worth watching all his tech talk videos.

Great video! Perfect explanation. I had not thought about varying depths of the wings. Deeper for lows and shorter as the frequency gets higher. I guess a full range driver would be very hard if not impossible to try this with.

Thank you for posting, groove! Ill definitely check out more of his videos.

I have a lot of curiosity in this area. I also have no desire to try it myself.  :D

In a full ranger application, a really aggressive scallop cut in the wing might do something desirable?

Im interested in trying this with my 15 bass driver only baffles, so I guess Id need them relatively deep (6 to 10?) I wonder how much difference itd make making them deeper on one side than the other? Experimenting will be the only way to find out.
