I tried corner placement and experienced the same thing that you are.
Way too much bass ..... the room is overloading.
The center placement worked out much better.
Something else I noticed (which is also true of every other bass baffle or powered subwoofer setup I have used) is the best setting ended up being to dial the crossover and gain of the subwoofer amp to where it sounded "good" and then backed the gain off a little.
In most cases (in my experience), when the bass system is drawing attention to itself, it's too much and not a good sound.
I enjoy a "foundation" ..... not a nosebleed .....

There are some recordings that are exceptions .....
I recently found a recording by Brian Bromberg and there is a track on it that blows my mind every time I play it ..... "My Bass".
It seems that no matter how much gain I have on the plate amp, it still sounds incredible .....

Hang in there and keep tweaking it .... you will get there .....
